L.A. + Riverside/San Bernardino Arbitron Radio ratings: May 2012

I glanced at the la ratings, and I'm impressed with KBIG, they are now second behind KIIS, also I'm impressed with KQIE, they still managed to keep climbing and gain listeners, despite KGGI rebounding and gaining a full percentage point.

Jack's predicted demise a bit premature - big increase in share while still cumming 2,000,000 listeners. The funniest rumor I've heard (over at LA Radio.com) is that they would drop the Jack format for a sports format anchored by Clippers Basketball.

There is no demise for Jack, despite what the 6+ numbers may say. When you're billing $30 million, it's pretty silly to blow it up for any format, especially in this economic climate.

Notes & Thoughts:
* Why is 100.3 KSWD-FM still reported as Adult Alternative? Bonneville gave up on that direction a year after launching The Sound. I wish it was AAA, but unfortunately, from my point of view, Classic Rock has served them better in terms of growing their share of audience
* Nice to see 95.5 KLOS hovering in and above a 3 share. Perhaps, that will put to bed the talk of flipping this heritage rockers to talk
* 93.9 KXOS-FM has fallen to below a 1 share. Too bad that Emmis is moving forward with selling the signal outright to Grupo Radio Centro (GRC). I was hoping that GRC would throw in the towel and that Merlin might be able to then snag it for their long rumored entry into the LA market
* 99.5 KKLA fails to register yet again. Why doesn't Salem put KRLA on FM and move KKLA to 870 AM?
* 92.7 KLST is showing up consistently at 0.4. Not bad I guess for a rimshot. Certainly it is a notch above what they were achieving as "Jill"
* 830 KLAA & 570 KLAC are both trending up now that baseball season is in full swing (pun intended)
* Clear Channel has to be quite pleased with its performance of win, place, and show PLUS the 4th position too

I have to admit I find myself listening to KBIG alot more with some of the new rhythmic pop in the playlist. It's more current based with most of the retro stuff cut down.

The format descriptions on websites generally come from the site editor. KSWD lists itself in Arbitron's SIP as "classic hits."

This is probably nit-picking, but KLYY is a rimshot, while KLST is simply a low powered station that is licensed inside the market. I don't think anyone would call KRCD or KJLH or KDAY or KBUE a rimshot... why call KLST by that name?

Because the signals you cited are all based much closer to the center of the market, with their signals clearly audible in the Downtown LA to West LA corridor. KLST is in Thousand Oaks, 40 miles away from mid-city LA, and its two other signals are both located a great distance away as well - The OC signal transmits from 40+ miles away, and the Adelanto signal is 60+ miles away (line of sight), and is 80+ miles away if bending around the San Gabriel ridge. Thus none of the three provides a clean signal into mid-city, and is as such, clearly within the qualifier of a rim shot, i.e., peripheral to the market.

But the market is ALL of LA and Orange counties... The OC signal is well inside the market, making it totally home to the market. Being close or not to the downtown of one of the many cities in the market is not really relevant.

The other two signals are not licensed to any city that is inside or "Home" to the LA market, and one is sort of a rimshot (it barely gets a 70 dbu anywhere in LA County) and the other is simply irrelevant.

The rim of the market is, in this case, the non-adjacent part of the county line of OC and LA County. Fountain Valley is well within the market, not on the outside shooting in.

It's interesting how KIIS is on top and widening their lead sounding very mainstream(Carly Rae Jepson, Gotye, Justin Bieber,Fun, Adele, Katy Perry).I remember people on this board saying mainstream wouldn't work in LA due to the ethnic makeup. There was a time when KIIS' music was very similar to Power 106. Now the stations sound nothing alike. Check both stations playlists this week to see what I mean.

Rhythmic pop has wide appeal, same with acts like Gotye. It's the guitar driven pop-rock that wouldn't work on CHR in a heavily ethnic market. Actually it's not popular anywhere right now, even in non-ethnic markets. I was listening online to the CHR in Fargo ND Y94 and their music isn't that different from KIIS.

How about KFRG down to a 3 share in the IE. I remember when this was a HUGE station 20 years ago. Even a few years ago they were doing better than this. I realize this mostly has to do with ethnicity. Still it's interesting at one time the IE was a much stronger country market than New England markets like Boston, Hartford, and Providence. Now country is booming in New England and not the IE.

I have also started to listen to a lot more KBIG. Maybe I'm just getting older, but I've started to move away from KIIS and KPWR and KAMP. You're right though, that adding rhythmic pop and updating the playlist to more current tunes and only a few gold songs from the late 90s to now has completely renewed this station.

They probably don't care if I'm listening though, since they aren't chasing guys.

I know KBIG playlist reminds of KMXV back home in Kansas City in the late 90's and early 2000's. Very Adult CHR leaning with no rap unless its a Nelly or Puff Daddy track. I guess the new MD is trying to mix it up a little. I find myself not listening to KPWR at all too.

KTWV is doing okay.

KBIG has been spinning Eminem & Rihanna "Love the Way You Lie", and I would think that Eminem would be a little too "hard" of an artist for Adult CHR or Hot AC but it works. They've also been keeping Nelly "Ride Wit Me" around as a regular gold track for the past month or so. Ten years ago, these songs would have never made the cut at the format.

Also, last night in the 8pm hour I was driving home and they played Kanye West "Gold Digger" and I almost crashed my car. I never thought I'd hear Kanye West on Hot AC. KBIG has become the home for rhythmic gold and pop/rock/soft rhythmic currents, though.
