L.A. Stations South of the Border?

A while back I was driving to San Quintin, south of Ensenada, and while driving along the tollway between Playas de Rosarito and Ensenada it appeared all the L.A. stations, including Indie and KJLH, came in extraordinary clear. On top of that Inland Empire stations KOLA, KFRG and KGGI also were received exceptional clear in that area.

Given the terrain of Baja California facing the ocean I am curious how far south, whether it's simple in-of sight or ocean skip, can L.A. stations be heard?

Years ago, KRUZ 103.3 in Santa Barbara us to run an ID that said "From the tip of Baja to San Francisco this KRUZ Santa Barbara" Apparently they had reception reports from down there. On another note: KEYT 3 from the same XMTR site, could be seen clearly in San Diego with Rabbit Ears near the coast before the CH3 south of the boarder came on. I know 101.9 Glendale made TJ with only 675 watts from Mount Wilson back in the seventies.

When I was at UCSB (1983-1987), we used to get the San Diego/TJ stations all the time. 91X (XETRA-FM) was a big favorite up there, came in better than KROQ (which suffered a lot of interference from the nearby airport radio)

Indy's Newport Beach transmitter site is the group of towers just west of the northernmost toll booth at the toll road.

It's easy to see why. Tijuana to Santa Barbara is a clear shot over water.
