L.A., tell me about your radio

I've been living here a week and finally got a portable AM/FM radio. I'm currently listening to Leo Laporte on KFI but I'd like to know what other good stations are on the dial. I came from Atlanta, which is probably home to the worst radio in the top 15 markets. Cox owns the town and Clear Channel can't get any good ratings there. So anything must be better than there in market #2.

I also have XM Radio, but I do still give local radio a chance. I've heard good things about KIIS in the past but don't know if that still holds true today. A friend of mine loves KBIG, and KROQ has a legacy but I don't hear much talk about it.

what kind of music do you like

KIIS FM 102.7 CHR/Top 40
KPWR FM 105.9 CHR/RHY
KBIG FM 104.3 RHY/AC
KMVN 93.9 RHY/AC
KCBS FM 93.1 Classics Hits
KRTH FM 101.1 Oldies
KDLD/KDLE FM 103.1 Indie Rock
KROQ FM 106.7 Alt. Rock
KYSR FM 98.7 Adult/CHR

You might also go to the Radio & Records website and click on the ratings button to see current rankings. That list (as opposed to the list here, which is just as current) also shows each station's format.

Im sure I'll get a snide remark or two, but if you like talk, 97.1 is pretty decent. I also listen to 640 and 830, but the FM talker has some interesting offerings, primarily after noon. Brian Whitman is from political talk, so it's not all mindless idiots.

To the list of big signal general market formats in LA, let's not forget:
KLOS 95.5 Classic Rock
KOST 103.5 Soft AC
KKGO 105/1 Country
KRBV 100.3 Urban AC
KHHT 92.3 Urban AC
KTWV 94.7 Smooth Jazz/AC
KCRW 89.9 NPR - Not a commercial station, but has some very good local music and talk programming...and a strong following.

I've been to that page (doesn't list frequencies), but rankings don't always accurately represent the opinions of the station. Back in Atlanta, one of the most listened to stations is WSRV, 97.1 The River, but all anyone does on Radio-Info is bash the station.

Tried it. Conway and Whitman is the only thing I found listenable on that station. Everything else was awful.

When I was in LA, I thought I'd be listening to Movin' the entire time ... but somehow ended up listening to K-Earth 101.

Hmm... must've been the real live DJs.

If you like Nirvana, you'll love KROQ. They play them every hour. Sometimes twice.

How can they fit in Nirvana twice an hour when they're playing Linkin Park three times an hour? :)

why everyone isn't listening to Indie 103.1, i'll never know.

Not enough signal, not enough non-Hispanic white folks.

If you can get Indie's signal at all count your blessings.
Great station, horrible stick.

Welcome to the area livingfruitvirus.
I recognize your name from "another" board that has stairs. ;)

Jesus. I'm not safe anywhere I go.

Keep it on KFI in the morning and afternoons. If you're in the inland empire, check out KOLA 99.9, it's a great oldies station. Probably better than K-Earth 101.1.

KFI, Bill Handel in the mornings. After 7 or 8 switch to KKGO until afternoon. I go back to KFI for news around 4. I'll go back to KKGO if John and Ken are being especially obnoxious. Probably would not listen to talk during the day as it requires too much attention for getting any work done. Wish there were more music choices for geezers like me but if it is not KKGO then it's "Jack". Never bother with the two "all news stations". ;D

Everyone likes their own stuff, but here's what I listen to myself:

Indie 103 - The morning show, Feel My Heat Monday nights, and Jonsey's Jukebox at lunch or at 6pm. The rest of the time it's mostly automated, or features this tedious guy who yells named "TK." Jonsey's Jukebox is probably the coolest radio show in the country. Jonsey is Steve Jones, the ex-Sex Pistol, and he plays a huge variety of his own choices: pure freeform in a major market. Mind blowing it's lasted this long!

KUSC - I'm a big classical fan, and this is the only station in town now.

KRTH - They keep popping in some new 70's nuggets, and I like the upbeat feel, especially while driving. Often have to switch away, though, when they once again whip out Brown Eyed Girl or Unchained Melody. They used to be the best Christmas music station, with lots of Elvis and Beach Boys, but last year switched to crappy KOST music like the Carpenters and (shudder) Mannheim Steamroller.

KCSN - Can't really get the signal too well, but I still tune in Chuck Cecil's Swingin' Years every Sunday night 8-12. I believe it's the longest running radio program in the United States. Chuck is my favorite on-air announcer.

KLOS - This station has a dreary and dull playlist of classic rock. However, about once a year they do an A to Z that will knock your socks off. Some really obscure stuff is unearthed. The only other time I listen to them is maybe Sunday evenings when they play 4 albums all the way through.

KFWB - Gotta listen to the first three innings of any Dodger game to hear Vin Scully. Still not sure why he only does the first three...

KPCC - Good local talk show called "Air Talk" from 10-12. On Friday they review films in a segment called Film Week. Prefer KPCC to KCRW, which is unbelievably snooty.

Did JACK for awhile, but it has become stale. Was also a longtime KROQ listener, but it's really a different station now, almost all of its quirky "modern rock" heritage has faded. It's now a bland corporate outlet for the latest MTV schlock aimed at 14 year olds.

All good choices for me, if I got Indie 103 here I would have Jonesy on for sure. I appreciate eclectic radio having done it for a while myself. Jack is a little stale, maybe because the novelty has worn off, but the music matches my taste more than anything else in the genre. I can't say if KROQ has changed so much as myself which is maybe why I don't relate anymore.

Chuck Cecil also plays on KKJZ 88.1 at 6am Saturday and Sunday, wish they made a simple Tivo for radio. :D

Also too bad Stephanie Miller is on opposite Handel, her show is incredibly funny and even if you don't get her political stance (I'm open minded) it is still interesting and very entertaining.

KRTH is better than I used to think but I commute on Metrolink and use a Walkman, their processing drives me crazy in my Sony headset.

I love indie one 0 three one it is a very well programmed station and has come a long way in its on air personality however i do miss the stoner dude doing the voice of the station. After the morning show they do have mr music director mr shovel from 10-noon but i do not know is he is voicetracked or live???Can someone tell me why they replaced the program director several months ago? KROQ is okay but i like 91x in sandiego better then them and also fm 94.9 its about the music byt the way both indie and fm 94.9 got write ups in rollingstone in the summer of 2006 well thats about it your indie/alt fan known as hotpatrick out
