I did a swoop thru LA tv news the evening on 6/13 and the morning of 6/14, and watched quite a bit.
My observations, for what they are worth:
KABC is the gold standard, and have not really changed their course over the past decades. They still demand to be noticed and still seem to be confident and comfortable in their skin. They offer a nice balance of excitement and human interest stories that seem to work well in L.A.
KNBC has a nice look, and Chuck Henry is still rockin' it. A nice pro, and probably the dean of L.A. anchormen right now. (Though I do miss Paul Moyer). Nice graphic look, and a nice balanced approach between hard news and filler.
KTTV follows the Fox formula, so it is somewhat benign. However, they did cover the police standoff in Inglewood on their Good Day L.A. morning news with wall to wall and did it with a good pace and commentary.
KCBS. Hmm. Didn't do much for this viewer. Mostly forgettable, IMO. I do admire their counterpart KCAL for the quantity of their newscasts throughout the day. L.A. has more local newscasts than any other market, and KCAL is a big part of that. Kudos.
KTLA. A good indie new operation. Tough to compete with the big guys, but also followed the breaking news the next morning. Gotta love that classic "5" logo, though.
11 and 13...I guess they combine their news operations. Fine. And not high interest for me.
Overall, I really miss the lack of big-time anchor talent that was once seen in Los Angeles. I also recognize that times are changing and this isn't reality anymore. But in the end, L.A. still provides the best overall local news product in terms of quantity and yes, maybe even quality in the the country.
