LA-610 or M610?

Jeff has said he uses the m610 with the aircorp 500 tv..very pleased with the way my Brauner Phantom c sounds.what a bargain.Hope Jeff didn't mind me jumping in...yall be good, you here..

Glad to hear the Brauner is working out ;)

I just picked up a TLM103... and forgot what Jeff was using.

I'd like to get the LA-610 with the pre-amp AND the EQ/Comp section. But I guess the regular M610 would work. I'd most likely run to a DBX286 or a Symetrix 528 to use the gate/expander for noise control.

I would think the TLM103/M610 combo would be a "phat one".

Thoughts?

Right now tweaking the TLM103 with my ISA220/528 combo.

true systems solo p preamp is good with the tlm103.i like the grace 101, which i will order soon and use it with my aircorp 500 ph, very lite EQ processing..But to me it sounds like you have a very workable solution with what you have...

IMO, the TLM 103 shines when paired with a transformerless, Class A solid-state preamp. It's a fairly pristine sounding mic and it shines when the signal stays pristine. If you're a fan of the Universal Audio sound, I'd give it a shot with the 110 instead of the 610. Just my opinion.

The M610 is the one that I have..I like it a lot..BUT as usual I got a bug to get a John Hardy M1. Did a session in Miami last week at a studio that had it..what a nice preamp. Not tubey, but real clean, punchy, and h-u-g-e..So far no call back from the John hardy people.

The LA610 made the signal a little muddy when the compressor was inline..I used it with the compressor section in BYP most of the time..moved it to Atlanta, and bought a single channel M610.

Now I'm wantin' an M1

This just won't stop will it?

The M1 is AWESOME! I'm torn between Focusrite's Red preamp, the M1 or (anything from) API for my favorite preamp sound. The M1 is the cheapest of the bunch, so if I were buying a preamp tomorrow, that would be my box. It is incredibly hard to beat at any price!

I've been thinking about the M1 myself. I didn't even consider the 610 stuff 'til I heard Jeff's clips (I kept thinking of all those woofy sounding Mamas and Papas records), but it's on the wish list now, too.

Anybody have any thoughts about the output transformer option for the M1? What does it add to the sound, etc?

M1

I've got the M1 with the VU-1 meter and the output transformer options. It's a very nice box. I've never heard one without these options but everyone I talked to says get them so I did.

Bought mine from Mercenary Audio. It was the best price I could find at the time and the guys were very helpful in answering my questions. Also, Mercenary ships the M1 with the options "standard."

I've currently got mine paired with a 416. It's a very clean sound. There was one spot I was doing with a sort of folksy read. The ess'es were killing me. So I tried running my RE20 through the M1. Had to crank the gain way up but it blew me away. I never knew that mic could sound that good.

....what about GREAT RIVER ME-1 NV

Hi I don't want to be a thread hijacker but I would like to jump into preamp conversation.......

I know that folks in the US consider Hardy M1 as a industry standard for VO but what is a opinion about Great River ME-1 NV for doing that ?

I already have Metric Halo ULN2 interface which preamps are in the same teritory as Hardy M1 is-clean and transparent, so I want to add something with different color...with balls if you like for doing trailers type of VO or imaging.

Anynody here using GREAT RIVER ME-1 NV for voiceover/s ?

Thanks in advance,

Sven

I'm not sure I'd consider the M1 a standard in the US at all...I don't see them being used too often. They're kind of a 'secret weapon'. If there are stanards, they're probably the Focusrite ISA series pre and the Avalon boxes. I have heard Great River's sound, though I don't have any direct experience. Of course, everything I have heard sounds outstanding, but I would expect no less from a pre at that price. As great as the sound is, the sound doesn't leap out at me the way the M1 does.

If you're looking for color, have you considered some of the Vintech or Chandler Limited stuff?

Hi Sven - I use a Great River ME-INV. It's awesome and bulletproof. I actually have it feeding a Metric Halo ULN2 as well !

But i've never heard the M1 before.. nor have I ever seen anyone else using one for that matter - so i can't compare.

The "industry standard" in the VO world around here for now seems to be the Focusrite Voicemaster, which usually sounds quite good before it falls apart. I know 5 people using Voicemasters, and all but one of those boxes stopped working after about a year.

Well.... I just won an Avalon M5 off eBay - $895. Can't wait to pair it with my TLM and dbx286a.

I have heard that...I have one and I love mine, but I've heard people say that about the boxes. Do you know if it's typically just the pre that dies? I've heard several complaints about the preamp, and I don't really care about that. If it dies, I'll just replace it with a better front end. The processing it outstanding and I'll be pissed if the whole thing craps out on me.

I bet that'll sound shiny! ;D The word "pure" comes to mind.....

Can't say for sure, but had to coax a performance out of a dying Voicemaster a few months ago - the pre and compressor worked fine, bypassed everything else. The fact that you can bypass faulty modules is what saved us that time. Not sure what was going on, bad capacitors - definitely bad switches.. but the unit did a fine job at that time despite it's crippled state. Another friend who uses his Voicemaster to voicetrack a lot of CC stations ended up with a completely unusable box - he ended up buying another one anyway 'cause the PreSonus "All in one" didn't cut it like the Focusrite did.

Right now I've got a Soundeluxe U99 on it. I've gone through a Sennheiser 416, Neuman TLM 170, TLM 103, Gefell M930, and sE Electronics z5600. But when the tube on the Soundeluxe is good - nothing beats it. When the tube goes, gotta replace it, or swap mics right away.

wow !!!!!

tube mic into a colorfull preamp....... I was afraid of that combination for VOs (vocals too dark ???) but if working for you......

Oh why not..

I just returned today from a trip to Miami again to finish a project..The studio used a John Hardy clone preamp made by a company called Seventh Circle Audio. It was a Twin Turbo Jenson design clone made using John Hardy 990 opamp modules..two of them. What an amazing system..I have ordered three of them assembled at the factory. You can get them as kits..cheap..but they require the powered rack to run them.. The cleanest sounding pres I have heard, and lots of gain. Had to turn them down when using the Brauner mics, but WOW..just like cotton pulled from the ears..crisp, punchy and b-i-g all at the same time.

This foolishness MUST cease

OK, what words describe your M610 in comparison? I ask because these are my top two candidates.
