La Bamba in True Stereo

I just heard the original by Ritchie Valens "La Bamba" in true stereo AFAIK. The vocals were mostly on the right channel. It sounded unbelievably good!! It was like hearing a brand new song but at the same time being reaquianted with an old friend. It did not sound like it was one of those reprocessed/remastered jobs some people do to some songs like "Good Vibrations" or "Gimme Some Lovin'". I heard it on WRSI Northampton, Mass... aka 93.9 The River a pretty decent and eclectic AAA station.

I just checked the WRSI playlists online and didn't see ANY '50s artists in there. Are you sure that you didn't hear the Los Lobos version, from the "La Bamba" movie soundtrack?

Superradiofan is absolutely correct...Its Ritchie Valens in super stereo...first surfaced in 1995 on Del-Fi reissue "Rockin' all night" the very best of Ritchie Valens"..still in print. The vocals on "La Bamba" are mixed on the right side (its breathtaking, no kidding). All other cuts are mixed equaally left and right for the middle effect. All the Instruments are clearly defined, If I remember correctly Earl Palmer on Drums, Renee Hall on Danelctro Bass , Carole Kaye On Rythmn Fender Strat (Not The Dano-Bass like the legend states)... Carole told me that Ritchie did the lead on a Danelectro Guitar(that gave all of Ritchies sound, that distinction, that only he had) , she said he was awesome for a 16 yrd old..... You can email Carole Kaye At Her website and she will e-mail back the whole story of the recording session. Carole has recorded on over 10,000 recordings, almost everything out of LA from the mid-50's - too today........ she is amazing. www.carolkaye.com

Wow, wadda story. Thanks Hornet!! Was "Donna" on that CD?

BTW how come no oldies station/ classic hits station worth its salt doesn't play the stereo version?

2nd BTW, last year the great Rich Brother Robin was very kind enough to e-mail me the MP3 file of a true stereo version of "Jailhouse Rock" that I heard on his station. Props of the highest order to Rich....

Now to find that Valens CD..............

On WRRC we play the stereo versions of La Bamba, Jailhouse Rock, Lonely Teardrops, Shout, etc - I'm really anal about finding the best sounding versions of songs for oldies airplay. Some people would rather hear it as they 1st did - in mono.

Kudos to you for THAT!! I agree about the "best sounding" versions and sometimes the original mono sounds better to my ears. Example: "Do You Love Me"-The Contours. I also heard on the 'net a stereo version of Jimmy Jones' "Good Timing" and it just didn't sound right.

WRRC?? Rider College?? Hey my best friend was a grad long time ago now. I'm a New Brunswick native. Do you have a website?

This is a good topic for discussion. Many songs from the '50s and early '60s were "re-channeled" for stereo LPs. That's been discussed here before. But some hits were actually re-recorded in stereo for LP issue. An example I'm thinking of right now would be Ray Charles' "What'd I Say". The original single version runs 5:04 and the re-recorded Atlantic stereo version runs 6:26. Ray did a great job of re-recording the song, but many of us that remember the original prefer that version.

here is my question...I have the 6:25 version of "What I Say Pt 1 and 2"...is that really a re-recording, or the LP version?? I don't know...sometimes the single and LP version were different only in length. Yes if the Oldies were worth their salt they would play the stereo versions, almost all are available today. Unfortunately the best Oldies are on AM stations. Many Internet stations play the stereo versions of all oldies available in Stereo. Rich Brothers one of the best stations on the net, absolutley.

Listen carefully to the "chatter" between Parts 1 & 2 in both versions. That's the tip-off that they are two different recordings. There would have been no need to shorten the single version because Parts 1 & 2 were on the A & B sides of the 45. Radio was only playing Part 2 back then.

Follow-up to stereo recordings availability: Eric records has a series of cd's "Hard to find 45's on CD" volumes 1- XXXX this series is GREAT for three reasons;
1. Hard to Find Cuts
2. Alot of cases the original SINGLE( or 45 version, as they are normally referred as) version.
2. Some cases, available for first time in Stereo.

I am also very anal in finding stereo versions........good example True Stereo version of "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procul Harem, only available to my knowledge, on double cd anthology , and it is an alternate version. I personally cannot tell that it's an alternate version, but some of my collector cronies can.

Correction: I was wrong. Radio did play both parts of "What'd I Say". They only played Part 2 of "Honky Tonk".

The very first time I ever heard Whiter Shade of Pale in stereo was last year while listening online to KSWD 100.3 The Sound in L.A. while they were still AAA. Of course that song can be played in many formats, but I did a double take when I heard it. I e-mailed the DJ, Mimi Chen, who let me know about the Dick Bartley collection. Or maybe she told me it was from a collection but she couldn't remember but suggested I Google it. Anyway I found out how to get it.

But thank you so much for your referral to Eric Records http://www.ericrecords.com/

I just got finished reviewing their catalogue and looked at all the tracks ........... DAY-ummmm there's so many nuggetts that I had forgotten about! OH MY GODDD and OH WOW songs on every CD I checked!! WOW I'll need to raid Ft Knox to order them all....... :)

"Enamorado", I haven't heard that in decades.

I thought of another one. (Actually I just heard it on Radio Bop). The mono single version of the Beach Boys' "Be True To Your School" is, in my opinion, superior to the stereo Lp version.
