La Crosse Radio

I enjoy reading the boards but for the first time in my 35 years of radio I had to say something. Every year a bunch of us "GM's" take a few days off a travel for a spring fishing trip. This year we landed in La Crosse. Like most radio people we all spend time surfing the dial and listening to what each market is doing. I came across a couple of radio stations that made me wonder what the heck is going on in your market. The first being WQCC and the 2nd was WKBH. The morning show on WQCC is the worst morning show I've ever heard in my life. It's a two person show and John (I think that's his name) sounds like a cartoon with no flow and no content. The lady on the show has a good voice but tries way to hard to be a sex goddess on the radio which I'm sure this demo really wants to hear. I was dumbfounded on how bad they were. The other station was no better. The jocks had no prep, no flow, the breaks were to long and the commercial production on both stations was horrible. It's been a long long time since I've heard a jock "bark" on the air and they do it all the time! This led us to investigate further only to find out these stations belong to a group and when we listened to the other stations we just kinda laughed out loud and thought what would happen to us if we treated out stations like that. It can't be the market because the other stations from other owners sound great! The imaging is good, the jocks and shows are great and the music in on track so my question is what's up with this group? Have they always been this bad? Do people really listen to the cartoon and sexy momma in the morning? Do they have a lot of turn over? Not being from the area I would really like to know your take on it. When we heard the other stations as stated, we knew it wasn't the market but those stations and the leadership which is very much lacking. If I was a client and heard my commercial the way it was produced I would be very upset! Looking forward to seeing what you have to say!

...and folks wonder why I'm breathing better in Tucson after leaving La Crosse three years ago ;-) ...
