LA Jack

Any theories on why the LA Jack has more early success than it's cousins in New York and Chicago? Even by the first trend, it was clear that KCBS was going to do well, which might have helped influence Infinity to go Jack in NY and Chicago. Is the LA Jack a better station or was there a bigger hole for the format in Los Angeles?

If I'm not mistaken, the NY and Chicago stations flipped to Jack in June, meaning there isn't even a full month in the trend (much less a full book) to reflect if the stations are doing well or not.

Doesn't this trend cover May-June-July? If you compare the first month of Jack/LA to the first month of Jack/NY and Chicago, you would see a significant difference.

Jack in NYC was probably DOA because of all the negative publicity about flipping the oldies format.

Take your pick...

1. There is less "cume cleansing" going from ARROW to JACK than Oldies to JACK. Arrow also had alot less cume to cleanse than JMK or WCBS.

2. I think it was Mike McVay whom wrote an article regarding what format holes needed to exist for JACK to flourish. While I can't remember exactly what the stipulations were, I remember that based upon his thoughts, JACK had a better chance in LA but not Chicago or New York.

3. LA is LA, an island off the coast of America. Life in Chicago and New York has more in common with life on Mars than it is to life in LA.

WCBS-FM was a much more personality driven oldies format and part of New Yorkers lives than listeners are used to on KRTH. So that is big reason why there has been such a negative reaction to the switch to Jack in N.Y.C. (and Chicago). KCBS The Arrow had such a short playlist that probably the listeners were not nearly as offended by the switch to Jack in L. A. Now at least they are getting a much bigger playlist.
Speaking of The Arrow and other stations like it..... It is a common solution for these big corperations to reduce the playlist and personalities as the stations start to fail. And as the ratings continue to slide they reduce the personalities & playlists even more. Then they blame the problems on everything but their own programing short comings. I know first hand. Been there done that.
