LA LAKERS RADIO GIG

Any news on LA Lakers radio gig?

Last week Andrew Marchand of the NY POST reported that Spero Dedes (of YES NETWORK) was one of the finalists for the gig.

I have not heard any news on this but I think the Lakers should take a look at Ross Porter or Larry McDonald. Ross has many years of experinece with UNLV basketball and Larry of course with the Lakers. Should be interesting to see who they pick for their radio voice.

Wait, Joel Meyers is out? Or did he move to TV play by play?

Myers has moved to the TV side, that's why they are looking for a radio voice.

I have not heard Larry McDonald, so I can;t comment. I would have to hear Ross Porter's work to comment, but I think theywould want someone with a crisper delivery.

Who is Larry McDonald???

I know there is a Bill Macdonald and a Larry Burnett. Anyway, the Big Nasty(Joe McDonnell), has been calling Joel Myers "O.J." these last few months for back-stabbing Paul Sunderland to get that tv job. On a side note, I am surprised that there was no discussion about McDonnell's partner(Doug Krikorian) getting fired at 710.

Seriously doubt if Ross Porter becomes a Laker announcer. When did he last do UNLV, about 10-15 years ago? Porter used to do Pac-10 basketball's Game-of-the-Week, but that was so long ago that it probably preceeded his tenure with the Dodgers.

My bad...I meant Larry Burnett. He's been a fill in on KLAC Laker broadcasts before so I think it would be a natural fit. Who are your candidates? As far as Joel Myers, when the very thought of Paul being fired and Joel replacing him came up, Joel said he had no real interest in the TV gig because the radio job allowed him to do other sports that he did. So was it a lie from Joel or is this according to Big Joe. (no offense to Joe...he's a good guy...worked with him at KFI).

On Ross, he's actually been a Dodger broadcaster since 1976 (28 years) and yes, it must be over 15 years since his UNLV days ending in the 90's but still, he is a recognizable and beloved voice in So Cal Sports so I think he would be a nice fit.

I read somewhere that Bill MacDonald's name has come up as a candidate to replace Spero Dedes on the radio, if Spero goes to TV. Billy Mac is a good announcer and seems like a good guy so I hope he gets the Lakers radio job.

Dear God - NO! MacDonald is a basic, marginally acceptable talent whose main strengths are hosting pre and post game shows. He is NOT suitable for play by play - note his lack of doing same for his main employer. They won't simulcast for the same reason they stopped doing simulcasts - too much impact on TV (unless they're trying to save money and based on their recent TV deal, that doesn't seem to be an issue. Besides, the team may not even be paying for the talent.)

If they want a real, professional, proven NBA play by play superstar who will blow the doors off anyone they could be looking at here, they need to look north to the talented Kevin Calabro, late of the departed Seattle Supersonics. He is not tied to an NBA team and would give LA the best 1-2 announcer team ever.

Not unless they can get Chick to do the games, and that doesn't seem likely.

Gotta agree with AM FM on Billy Mac - he is a marginally talented play by play guy at best. It seems like on the rare occasions he gets to sit in the broadcast booth, it is only because everyone else at FSN is either assigned or on vacation. And I have never felt he has done much with said opportunities. Nice guy, and even enthusiastic to be sure, but pre and post games suit his talents best.

As for the whole situation, it is hard to understand why the Lakers are always into cheapskating their broadcasts when there are very talented name broadcasters who would give their soul to get the Lakers gig. Joel is a consummate name professional who does an excellent job on the broadcasts. He brings stature to the Lakers just as they do to him. Spero Dedes?? Nice guy, can't complain about his work, but is he really up to one of the highest profile play-by-play jobs (Lakers TV) in all of sports? The new contract will have them rolling in the money, if there is a change to be made, it should only be to upgrade the broadcast (if that is possible) not be the TV training ground for the next "up and comer".

I'm hearing Kevin Calabro who already works for ESPN Radio as a leading candidate for the radio gig on KSPN and the Lakers Radio Network. Billy Mac would be a terrible choice. He is not a play by play guy as demonstrated when filling in for Spero Dedes.

Really? Spero Dedes who is calling the NFL for FOX and has worked for NFL TV? Who called NCAA March basketball for CBS? Who went to the Olympics for NBC? He is young and an up-and-comer, but the Lakers probably felt--and may have been told--that he'd be moving on unless he got this gig. And they'd probably be right. He's not an old-timer, which LA people seem to prefer, but he's an excellent PBP guy, and the Lakers would be lucky to have him as long as they had Chick. Not saying he's Chick, but he's great.

I still miss Paul Sunderland, btw.
