LA Ratings R Out

Maybe texting is the new talk radio, a way of people electronically connecting with others. I wonder if that could go the way of the CB radio? When it comes to KGO vs KCBS in Bay Area, I wonder if the traffic reports are a factor for some people.

I doubt traffic reports are much of a factor. All the news/talk stations run them.

The Bay Area needs a quasi -All News station (KGO) like San Francisco needs more fog. KCBS and KQED have dominated News for years. Their current mess of a format - all news weekdays except for Ronn Owens, Pat Thurston, and Karel - was just Cumulus's way of cutting costs. I doubt anybody inside that company thought it would be a ratings leader with the current format.

It was widely assumed they wouldn't renew Owens' contact at the end of '12, so I guess he's a ratings bright spot.

Traffic reports on the radio are now archaic thanks to Smartphones coupled with the SigAlert app. I can get quicker info on MY route than having to wait for a radio traffic report and THEN wait for them to (maybe) talk about MY route. And if you just barely miss the report or even tune in while they are in the middle of it, you may still have missed the info you need. Same goes for the sports scores again thanks to apps like MLB.com At Bat, etc.

In the Bay Area, traffic reports and sig-alert apps are both often useless. the Bay itself is the primary geographic factor. For example, if the Bay Bridge is jammed with traffic, your only alternative to cross the Bay is to detour many miles out of your way to another bridge, and traverse come other county to get to your destination. Either that, or park your car and take a passenger ferry or BART.

"Bay Bridge"? Is it still called that? Oh wait---I may be a day or two premature. Lew, what do you think about the California State Assembly yesterday voting 68-0 to rename the western section of the bridge after former Assemblyman and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown? If the Senate also passes the resolution, it will take effect because a resolution does not require the Governor's signature. Governor Brown says he is against renaming the bridge. This morning on KFI, Bill Handel said they shouldn't call it the Willie Brown Bridge---they should call it simply the Brown Bridge and the Governor would be in favor. :)

Despite all the totally justified charges of influence peddling, old Willie was a decent Mayor. At least things got done during his tenure. He was also Speaker of the Assembly for about 100 years and he's an historical figure in California politics. He got his start fighting housing discrimination in San Francisco in the early 50s. He's a one-of-a-kind San Francisco character

So I'm OK with it. But it's been called Bay Bridge for over 75 years - I don't think people are going to call it "The Willie Brown Bridge." Actually, Jerry Brown had a lot to do with getting the new span going wheng he was Mayor of Oakland, and deserves some of the credit - or blame, depending on who you ask. So just "Brown" might make some sense.
