LA Talent in SD?

When did the union contracts expire? Were they "busted"? What happened? Part of deregulation?

There were no unions in the markets where I worked but I heard stories in the 70's and early 80's about union jobs where you didn't/couldn't run your own board because of union rules etc.

Union contracts in San Diego typically only covered the AM side, so AM 1360 (which was KGB-AM) was union but KGB-FM was not. You also had all of the independent FM's (Not affiliated with an AM station) that were non-union. In the 70's and early 80's the FM's started to become the dominant stations in town so the guys at lower rated AM's often made more money than guys at the more successful FM's. Over the years the FM stations started increasing pay and the union AM's stopped getting any sort of significant raises. AFTRA also did nothing when KOGO was purchased and the new owners and General Manger Dex Allen decided to not honor the union contract. People who'd been there for perhaps decades were supposed to have gotten sizeable severance pay under the AFTRA agreement but instead for one week's pay and a kick in the ass. I remember seeing one 55+ ex-KOGO news guys working in a 7-11 in Lakeside.

I checked the "AFTRA NATIONAL NEWS & BROADCAST DEPARTMENT Station Contract List – updated 7/13/06" and the only contracts it shows for San Diego are KFMB AM/FM/TV, which is dated 3/21/98 – 7/31/01, a Shadow news contract which ran out on 2005 and the Metro News contract which ends in 2009. Does that mean the KFMB people are working under a contract that hasn't been re-negotiated since before 1998?

Bob hit it on the head. I see guys who were big in the 70's still hanging around, because
they have no place else to go. KOGO went through some terrible years under people
like Dex Allen.

Out side of Rick Roberts -- there is not any local live hosts on 760 KFMB. The weekend shows are brokered, and everything else is conservative syndicated shows.

KFMB (Was: LA Talent in SD?)

Kind of sad isn't it?
I mean, I know radio is a business, and you want to maximize your profit to cost ratio and all, but you would kind of expect a station with a legacy and ownership like KFMB to at least keep some kind of dignified local progaming. But then again, I guess we could say the same thing about KCBQ, huh?

If I didn't know better, I'd think KFMB was for s... Well, you know...

It is bad. KFMB-AM was considered the tiffany of local broadcasting during the 70's & 80's. For many years
it was the number-one market biller

I only have billings for SD going to 1984, but KFMB was #1 in billings from that year to 1992. In 1993, it was second to KSON, and by 1994 it was down to 6th.

KFMB-FM was #1 in 1998 to 2000.
