Labor Day DX

640 KHz 9/3/2012: Haircare products featured at the County Fair, forest fires, earthquakes, robber shot and killed at an adult video store, paparazzi, and yes - the Weiner dog races! Can you guess the station I heard on Monday morning? I've heard it a few times before but never this strong and clear from Michigan. You won't need headphones for this one, check it out:

Good job. I used to get KFI very well here in the Chicago area, but because of WMFN & other stations, I rarely hear it anymore.
This is a great time of year for DXing the west coast during our sunrise. Usually in October I can often hear KNX clearly while driving into the city on the Kennedy Expy just as the sun is rising in the midwest.

Excellent. It was almost like being there.

Love the music on Coast to Coast AM at 0:18 from DJ Dialated, "Something Different Every Time". Dialated is from Loveland, Ohio, a suburb of my hometown.

WOW! I've never heard KFI so clear, and in Michigan to boot! I don't even get KFI that much here, due to a horrible spur from KXPA-1540, that can still be heard to the East (null).

How did you null WMFN?

WMFN is usually strong, but for whatever reason, they weren't heard during the KFI reception (or at least I didn't notice them underneath). I had a good null to the east, but WMFN is about 30 miles to the South. Oddly, there was no sign of KNBR on 680 during this KFI reception. Of the two, KNBR is heard much more often here.

That was great, Kilokat!!

Amazing signal and it's still summer.

And I usually don't start listing to AM at night until October.

Great catch, Tim! That's nearly as good as my midday reception from 99 miles away using only the built-in ferrite antennas in portable radios... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-ZDeESDIz8#t=1m57s :) I wonder what your reception might have been like on a small / ultralight radio? (The PL-398mp in the video clip is too large, according to Gary, Kevin, Rob, etc, to be an ultralight.)

Hey at around 4:50 to 5:15 or so I heard what sounded like a male DJ going into Cher Lloyd's "Want U Back" under KFI. Could that have been WWJZ in Mount Holly, NJ, the Radio Disney outlet near Philadelphia? Their morning DJ is Blake (on the "Wakey Blakey Show" from (I think) 6am-12pm ET (the voice & style kind-of sounded like it may have been him), and the song is one they frequently play. They run 50kW daytime with about 17-18 kW ERP toward western MI.
If that was WWJZ, have you had other cases of simultaneous co-channel both-coast reception? Or even better (and wintertime would be most likely for this) have you ever had simultaneous co-channel reception of a TA AND a TP (and/or DU) station? ;)
Another thing I'd like to see someone do (you're in the wrong location unfortunately) is get simultaneous reception of Canada & Mexico on the same frequency at midday on groundwave (no cheating with winter skywave), preferably with a signal quality comparable to this. (That's 1390 XEKT & KLTX recorded near Pacific Beach (San Diego), CA, on a SRF-59.) I wonder if, on 800, XEROK & CKLW might be possible from Kansas City, provided first-adjacent WHB on 810 could be dodged? ;)

Thanks for the comments guys. Gar - don't let the season fool you - AM DX is in full swing - time to hit those dials!

PP88 - I'll have to go back and check the recording regarding what you heard under KFI. I must have completely missed it. There's no way it could be Mount Holly as I had everything nulled to my east - brick wall style! Between my phasing and the time of day, I don't see anything from that far east getting through. Plus, I think I've heard that station only once before.

The Persus SDR is on my wish list. Years ago it would have been an HQ-180.

What kind of computer are you using with it?
