Labor Day format changes???

Has anyone heard of any possible format switches over the upcoming Labor Day weekend. I know historically radio stations like switching formats during long weekends and Indiana has been fairly quiet as far as stations changing. I hope something interesting happens next weekend!

IntEresting Use Of capitAl LetTering.

Indiana has been quiet? We just saw two MAJOR flips in the winter. How often do you expect format flips to happen?

Didn't realize this was going to offend people. I like how you jumped right in and made this a negative thread.

Chill out... just asking a question....

> > We just saw two MAJOR flips in the winter. How often do you expect format flips to happen?

True. However, this board does cover the whole state of Indiana... not just Indianapolis.

Fair enough.

"you're"

While we're at it...

"your" -- belonging to you
"you're" -- contraction of "you are"
"yore" -- time long past

"their" -- belonging to them
"they're" -- contraction of "they are"
"there" -- that place

Learn these. Really learn these. Settle these once and for all.

IF TPI flips to country is Indy big enough for 3 country stations?? As you can see from the recent books FMS is not losing any listerners, so Hank has to be pulling their listeners from other stations.

The city already has at least 4 stations playing various forms of rock. Why not 3 versions of country?

I Dont Think TPI will be flipping to COuntry Now. The Original RUmours was TPI was gonna Flip to COuntry in May. But WENS now Hank beat them to the Punch to Retaliate Gold's Flip To Jack since WENS wanted to be the Jack Station but Susquehanna owned the RIghts to Jack in Indy from the Rumoured Flip of then Retro 93.9 to Jack before they Settled on CCM as the SOng. So i either See TPI going Oldies or SOmething entirely else

Well i'm sorry but I didn't totally proof read before I posted this I was watching the video music awards when I was typing this out last nite. Is there anything Wrong with that. I've had enough problems with people being buttheads with me when i try to talk about stuff in other markets. They acted like why comment when your not even there even though i can listen to most of the stations from that market on online streams.

I think he is thinking he is so perfect that he can type out a response to a message board thread and do something else like watching a tv show simultaniously. Like I was when I was doing last nite when I responded

Like everyone else, I don't see country showing up on the 107.9 frequency. They've hired Julie Patterson for afternoons now. Do you think this is a last-ditch effort to revive the station? Or is this part of a bigger plan?

No, that's not how it works. The amount of radio listening that occurs is not a fixed number -- the "pie" of radio listening can grow or shrink. In this case, "Hank" has likely created listening that was not being done before it existed, giving them some numbers while not necessarily hurting others as the total amount of listening is grown.

Funny things can happen as the total amount of listening goes up or down. If listening goes up, it's possible that a station's share could go down while the actual amount of listening garnered by it would go up! Conversely, if total listening goes down, it's possible a station's share could go up while its actual listening went down.

Anyway, it's not necessarily the case that success for one station means loss for another.

There's usually a LOT of sharing between country stations so it's easy for an advertiser to buy the number 1 country station and still reach 40-80% of the number 2 country station's audience without ever running an ad on that station.

With three stations, an advertiser would find it very easy to reach close to 100% of country listeners without ever buying more than two stations. Depending on the strength of the number one station they might be able to just buy that station and still get 80% reach.

Selling the number 2 country station to profitability is TOUGH : selling the #3 to profitability would be impossible.

We talk a lot on this board about programming changes based on format holes etc. In reality, the audience is only half the picture.

You might look at Indy and say, "there's obviously a hole for an oldies station. Ratings were there 6 months ago and no that group isn't being served." and on the listener-side you'd be right.

However, the audience that an oldies station attracts is simply not attractive to advertisers... I should say, it's not attractive to enough advertisers to make an oldies station a viable investment. I know some of the oldies fans on the board may flame me for saying that, but it is what it is. I find it hard to believe that the Susquehanna folks would have released a 5-7 share with GOLD if they were having success in monetizing the audience. Same goes for the stations in New York and Chicago. They certainly wouldn't give up the ratings and the revenue just to be mean to oldies fans. Not if it hurt their P&Ls.

Shock has it pegged !! If a format change is in the works (hypothetically) A mainstream Urban would be the smart money, especially with ZPL under the same roof 18-34 (and 25-40 which isn't really a demo)would be on lock, with nothing radio-one could really do since they've locked themselves into opposites ends of the urban spectrum with no real talent in place to handle any legitimate competition. I know folks on this board ignore anything that has to do with urban, but the fact remains it's one of the highest grossing formats out there. Please think about it realistically before you post a negative reply..

There's more and more money moving to the format every year.
