What are some of the Cleveland radio stations doing this weekend? On 92.3 they are doing a Smells Like The End Weekend. They will be playing music from the 90's when The End was popular. Could this be a sign of things to come for 92.3?

One would hope. WXTM needs a good shot in the arm; reliving the glory days of The End is a start. What's key is that WXTM tries to mix some of the 90's alternative within the current fare after the weekend's OVER. Hey, try to be a little like WBWC, no? (Or CHUM Radio's CIMX/88.7 in Windsor/Detroit...)

It also goes without saying that WXTM has to drop the "Cleveland's Xtreme Radio" handle. Now more than ever, it doesn't fit 'em at all...

Earlier today I heard a promo for that, the first one I've heard actually. However the promo didn't mention anything about it being "Smells Like the End" weekend. It just was a woman's voice (probably Kim Monroe's) saying "92.3 Cleveland" or something, then a few song bits (Cracker, The Cranberries, Blind Melon), and then her voice again saying "Labor Day Weekend."

When I heard that I thought to myself, "format flip this weekend?" But, now I read your message and I guess it's just for one weekend. But, it could be a sign of things to come. A way of testing the waters to see if a true alternative station, or even a "classic" alternative station would do well in Cleveland.

BTW, Didn't Kim Monroe work at The End?

I was just at the 92.3 website, not only are they playing the music from The End (including stuff like They Might be Giants and Mazzy Star!!) but they are having old End DJ's host this weekend too!
 
From what I've heard...its going to kick off at midnight...with REM's "Its the end of the world as we know it." End personalities will be on hand to do air shifts, and the music will be a flashback to the glory days of 107.9. Should be a lot of fun to listen to!! For Xtreme's sake, I would hope this is a sign of bigger things to come as far as their format is concerned....otherwise I wouldn't see any point to this promotion at all from the station's standpoint. It would basically be like a reminder to us of how great rock radio once was in this town, and how bad it has gotten over the past 5 years.

Re: Labor Day Weekend Programming...The "Q's"

Q104 is doing a "Labor Day Par-tay weekend".
Seems a pretty good upbeat mix of music from the bits of it I heard earlier.

Of course, our favorite Q down south, Q92, is doing some kind of an Old School weekend too. I heard Mickey by Tony Basil at 4 in the afternoon as I cruised the 3rd FM band of the car radio. Naturally, this caused me to stop. Not something a CHR would normally be playing.
This was followed by Akon's Bananza (Belly Dancer), and later Good Times Roll by the Cars.

Good Lord.
WKDD and KISS-FM are gonna pick up a nice chunk of listeners this weekend. Who knows, they might never go back if they like what they hear.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think She did work at The End. I think Kim was in Seattle before coming to Cleveland.

I've been listening to Maria this AM. Gotta say it sounds soooooooo good.
I would love to see 92.3 pick up some 'classic alternative' it is just what we need in Cleveland.

Then 98.5 can flip to top 40 and go back to the WGCL calls. (j/k)

Just as when Radio One pulled the plug back in May 1999. (Trivia: the only sweeper that aired during that stunt - aside from the legal ID - plainly stated, "The End is Coming.")

Not only that, but former WENZ imaging voice Ted Kowalski - currently production director for Infinity's WDOK/WQAL - is doing the sweepers for WXTM this weekend. It's a complete return for The End (ironically enough, WXTM's studios are in the same area as WENZ's old studios!); the circle is complete.

Agreed. This is a good intructional piece for WXTM. They all should be tested on Tuesday.

But there's something else that's too much for me to not notice. All eyes have, in some way or another, started to focus on the whole Infinity cluster. The key elements are Howard leaving the airwaves in the next few weeks; so is Infinity hi-"Jack"ing stations nationwide, and Cleveland's soon to get on the list.

Are we missing a potential overhaul of WXTM that could come with a move to 98.5 or 104.1?

What timing! We were posting about the demise of The End further down the board earlier this week. Personally, I was lamenting the end of The End. Perfect timing Kim! I'm really enjoying the "Smells Like The End" weekend. Looking forward to hearing Rocco again!

Holy Freaking Crap! How many people were injured from this train wreck?

Besides the 80's tracks they're playing that have absolutely no place on a CHR today, they are calling it "Old School" when it doesn't even apply to this type of music. Morons. Just more reinforcement why they're in Canton (I don't wanna punk on small markets because I hear good REAL CHR in small markets, except here). The only song you managed to get somewhat close to the ballpark is C+C Music Factory.

- Hey, let's start the hour with a new song!!! That'll start your AQH with a bang (that would resemble an implosion).

- Blur???!! BLUR!!??? Are you f'ing kidding me?!! Obviously in LaLa Land, they have their own type of CHR and this album cut by Blur was a hit because it certainly didn't chart AT ALL here. "Boys and Girls" might be somewhat familiar, but even then you're doing some serious stretching. Please tell us: 1) where this song charted; 2) show us where a CHR demo would recognize this song and 3) what moron consultant team told this song researched/tested well and what demo they tested (at the chance of offending anyone, I won't make a comment as to the "demo" they tested). This is a prime example of when I wish there was actual live monitoring of ratings because you've hear a serious crash in cume.

- Metallica's "Unforgiven"??!! "Hi, We're WZKL, who's obsessed with every other radio station in and around our market and are more concerned about them than how we sound. In this instance, WRQK, a radio station who's demographic is of no relation to us because they're a f**king rock station, but we're still going to throw stuff like this in in the event they MIGHT come across us and stay for the remaining length of the song, although they will tune out immediately thereafter because they aren't our primary listener and there's no chance in hell of converting them. If you stayed tuned, you might hear Ozzy's 'Mama I'm Coming Home' or Tracy Bonham's 'Mother Mother' on this station that reports CHR, but doesn't have a clue in the world what it actually is."

Yeah, this song was a mild CHR hit back in the early 90's, but it was a novelty hit only because it was the follow-up to 'Enter Sandman.'

- Oh, can't forget Tommy Lee. How much did you get for this track?

What a waste of a signal!! This hour (and many others) is a prime example of people who haven't a clue in the world what the format is about and what demo they are to be targetting. And spare us your drivel about your ratings because this is also the same market that continue to give praises to WHBC-FM. That says enough about the people in Canton Metro who fill out the diaries. They're idiots. This is exactly the music your core 12-17 audience wants to hear. They're probably not listening anyway because they're too busy getting pregnant (ouch!).

Just flip to JOHN-FM already. At least that name & the sound of the station will have something else in common -- a toilet.
