Lack of accuracy, proofreading......

This afternoon, Bob Jones, KTSA 550AM newsreader, apparently isn't 'from here' or doesn't bother to proofread or verify whatever he's reading. In the story about Fox Tech high school losing its football team next year and this year's traditional "Chili Bowl" being the last, after 50+ years, Bob Jones described the "Chili Bowl" as the traditional rivalry between Fox Tech and LAMAR high school. ???? Lamar high school is in AUSTIN! Its LANIER high school, Mr Newsreader! Any NATIVE in their 30's and older who grew up INSIDE loop 410 knows this, even if they didn't attend either school. But this is not an isolated incident, but a daily event that even occurs on a national and international level in every form of medial. Its annoying and somewhat insulting to those with more than two functioning brain cells to listen to the neverending cascade of incorrect and unverified "facts", gossip, mispronounced street names, incorrect geographical locations, etc. Who is responsible and where do these obviously incompetent people come from? If you're not going to VERIFY or PROOFREAD or CORRECTLY PRONOUNCE what you call "news and information, why bother? How soon will it be when we start hearing "breaking news" about the 500lb Batboy, Elvis shoplifting at the thriftstore and those pesky UFOs not paying their parking tickets? Remember when we all said there was no future? Well, this is it!

its radio... everyone makes mistakes. i cant count how many mistakes ive made on air.

Hey Fred,

We will be watching you today. Looking for your daily mistakes. Do you trust the intern that writes your copy?

Not enough people around to ensure 100% reliability. Not in newspapers, radio, TV, retail, service sector, industrial manufacturing,
transportation. etc. The corporation/best business practice says we can get by at the level of service we're at now.

In Chicago 2-3 days ago we had an incident, still unclear, where a Chicago Transit Authority train left the station and
a mother with child (and stroller) were running to catch it. What IS known is that the stroller went with the train, clamped in its doors,
the toddler ended up off the platform about 20 feet away beside the tracks. The trains, now without conductors for about ten
years, rely on the operator to SEE that the passengers are IN, the doors CLOSED, then cross over to the operators side of the train,
and pull away. If we can't afford to have enough people in place to ensure public safety in an inherently dangerous environment,
how likely are we to see anyone hiring proofreaders or copy editors?

On the other hand, if you never make any mistakes, you're not doing anything at all.

The name Bob Jones sounded familiar, so I went to the KTSA website. He's not there.
I searched and found him on Linkedin. He's listed as a part time news announcer for KTSA.
He also tells of his career with the military, and, lo and behold, he was a television anchor for WWL-TV back in the '70's. Lamar/Lanier- just a brain f--t. Someone with his depth of experience working part time, and not even listed on the station website? That's a bit more serious.
BTW- Sidney Lanier's book, a sketch of 19th century San Antonio is a classic. Anyone interested in the Alamo City should get a copy.

Considering the vague grasp of the facts which KTSA's talkers seem to have about national politics these days, I'm willing to excuse a simple mistake by one of their news hounds. The news folks generally do a decent job of covering the big stories.

I'm less forgiving of some of the absurd, partisan nonsense I've heard Trey, Jack and Kevin spew lately.

Yes, people make mistakes. But these are supposed to be professionals. Its not the local cable community access channel at 3:45AM, or the high school radio/TV CC station. It happens more often every single day. I don't recall Walter Cronkite making any mistakes or blatant, half-hearted, mush-mouthed mispronounciations. Those oh-so-pretty talking heads on our local TV news shows are a prefect example of how photogenics means more than journalistic competence.

So BMP hires temporary, contract labor newsreaders? Why don't they hire temporary, contract labor talk show hosts? I think it would be quite refreshing from the garbage they have on now. And if KTSA has such low ratings, why do they still have more commercials than WOAI, or KTKR?
