Lack of Jay Leno causes increase in news viewers

WDIV in Detroit hasn't been affected at all by Leno - in fact according to The Detroit News, their ratings for their 11 PM news are actually higher than they were a year ago. By extension, I assume they did just fine and dandy on Tuesday.

From this area, I have no idea how WKYC Cleveland, WICU Erie and WGRZ Buffalo did, although WGRZ has definitely suffered from the Leno Effect.

WKYC has lost viewers of their 11 PM news and the "senior director" makes no bones about it on his blog that he's not happy with the Jay Leno situation [although he also makes pretty darn clear that it's HIS opinion and not the station or station owners]

Hmmmm, didn't Leno do a free show in Detroit last year at the height of the recession in that area?

And that's because WDIV caters to the old rich white population who never change the channel living in the suburbs like Pontiac, Royal Oak and Warrenton etc. Does that station still pre-empt stuff for Mattlock? The last I checked the GM was some 85-year old guy who also was GM at the Post-Newsweek station NBC station in Houston and call Jeff Zucker brilliant for expanding the Today show to four hours. WDIV's anicent audience is the reason why WWJ could never take off.

Yeah, specifically the Palace of Auburn Hills, the home arena of the Pistons.

I think you've got the station confused with WXYZ. WXYZ has been pre-empting stuff for Matlock for 20+ years. WDIV's newscasts are far from catering to older viewers - they are very tabloid-like and heavy on crime news.

Reminds me of a bit on David Letterman's old NBC show... During a viewer mail segment, he reads a letter from a viewer stating that she keeps setting her VCR for Dave's show but keeps recording a bad Matlock rerun instead, and asks Dave for help. Dave then has a model wheel out a TV/VCR combo, and Dave tells the viewer, "We are sending you... a GOOD Matlock rerun!" The model then ejects a video from the VCR with the label, "Good Matlock Rerun."

I'm not sure what this has to do with Detroit television, but I had to share it.

Ah thanks for clearing that up for me--Detroit stations were notorious pre-empters in the 70s, 80s, and 90s!! I checked the WXYZ schedule and looks like they are Matlock free these days. Perhaps its because Matlock's audience is mostly dead? Also that GM I referenced, his name was Steve Wasserman and he is no longer with with either WDIV nor KPRC in Houston. Hmm I wonder why....
