Lack Of shows Cancelled

I noticed this year....that the networks have had the lowest cancellation of shows then the prior years. Especially in this decade. Yes there was Jay Leno...and NBC would've kept it going if there was no affiliate pressure, but even shows that have been canceled..there letting them run it's course toward the end of the season, or place on a hiatus. It tells you the end of prime time is near. There is no budget to replace these shows right away or have something rapidly on waiting in the wings if a current show failed in it's 3rd week.
I hope they come up with something....because once "Lost" goes off, and Idol which is showing signs of some fading...especially when Simon leaves....there will not be a must see TV show and I can think of. (Maybe Hell's Kitchen). Let's see if this show "Happy Town" can get us to a must be at home for this one type of show. It's kind of late in the season to put it on.

I would guess 'cause of the recession ad rates are already depressed. Something has to be #1 and so if the ad rates aren't gonna go up much if a new show were to be a bigger hit, there's no point aggessively persuing it till the economy gets better.

The state of television is in trouble as we know it, with the internet in place, and certain web sites offering shows on your schedule, i can't see the over-the-air networks rolling out shows like they have been in the past, viewers habits have changed
dramatically, and a time could come when most shows will be "on-demand", we shall see.

Not to mention cable channels increasingly adding new (and more original) shows. USA, TNT, FX, Syfy, Showtime, HBO, etc. are all major competition to the broadcast networks, and they won't be going away anytime soon, either.

Indeed. To a viewer, television is television, and whether it's Fox or Fox News, ABC or USA is an irrelevant distinction. They like the shows and brands they like, regardless of transmission method. And since study upon study shows that people in all age groups are increasing the amount of TV they watch--regardless of increases in watching content online--TV as a medium is here for the long haul. The pie pieces may be smaller, but the pie itself keeps growing.

They're already making an impact; does anyone realize how many of their shows are regularly nominated for Emmy Awards alongside the broadcast networks? I guess we don't need to bring back the CableACE Awards.

in this recession they apparently don't even wish to invest in tried-and-true
super-cheap replacement shows like "The Best of YouTube", "Wedding Video Disasters" or
"America's Funniest Surveillance Camera Footage"

Making...yeah, when the audience is roughly speaking cut in half for the broadcast networks, that's a major impact. There's an argument that reatining 50% of an audience when competition expands from a handful of choices to hundreds, but either way, the reality is people don't worry about such distinctions.

Personally, I don't see "Happy Town" catching on unless ABC can find a better time slot because CBS and NBC will kill this one in a heartbeat.
