Lack of substance on network weekend newscasts

It seems to me tat netwrk saturday and sunday night newscasts are just severely lacking in substantive stories. ABC tonight did the Zimmerman story, then went to a pointless "it's hot in summer!" story followed by Cory Montieth's death... then total fluff with Royal baby preps and the revelation ythat JK Rowling wrote a crime novel under a fake name. Who cares? Very poor effort and it seems all too common.

On the cable news front, MSNBC is (Albeit SLOWLY) trying to change that by programming the weekends with live talk shows (They've already got the mornings & 4:00-6:00 PM ET hours all set). The rest of the day they do light newscasts & the Doc Block

CNN is mostly news & Fox News is mostly the week in review from what I've seen

Cheers & 73 ;D

All local and national newscasts are light on the weekends, it's been that way for years and it's a fact of life that I won't see as many 'bleeds it leads' stories, but more light consumer and 'having fun at the local fair' type of news. After a week of driving through all the drivel though, I don't mind the weekend newscasts at all.

The other thing is the weekend newscast is usually the first step on the talent ladder for everyone (as AJ Clemente unfortunately knows too well), so I give them much more latitude than the weekday people.

I gave up watching local and national news years ago. It was way too irritating (and unimportant).

There's less being put into weekend news, too. It used to be that a two-anchor format for weekend news was fairly common. Now, there's only one station in Phoenix that does that (KSAZ).

Weekend morning is a growth area for stations, but morning news is a little different to program and fits better on a weekend with a more event-oriented disposition.

NBC Nightly News Sunday edition did these stories in the same exact order. Except, instead of the "it's hot in summer," it was "gas prices are rising."

It appears that ABC has positioned its news division to grab the same demographics as their primetime lineup (mostly female, ages 35-64).
