Ladies and Gentlemen..the MIC MATE!

Chuck said:
A Dell flyer arrived in my mail box today. Just about every computer offered was available with either XP or Vista. I'll bet there is a reason. I understand that some Dell models can even be factory equipped with Ubuntu which is a Linux Operating System.

Having been burned by Vista once (I had to return the computer after a month of compatibility issues) it will be a while before I stick my toe in the Vista pool again. Maybe when Service Pack 2 comes out, but not sooner.

Speaking of Linux, anybody using it on their production/recording rigs? Compatibility seems to be spotty, at best, especially if you're wanting to use a USB interface. I was hoping to use an Ubuntu box with a USB preamp or USB mic, but so far there really doesn't seem to be many choices.

I use it only in the form of a Samba box to archive content for clients.

Sadly, when you're talking professional audio production and post work, all the applications seems to be written for the Mac or Windoze OS.

Hey all - back from vacation. Mic Port Pro kicked butt. Used the back seat of the rental car as a voice booth, recorded into the Mac and shot out VO tracks. Plenty of headphone volume. Clients were very happy with the sound.

I got it from Musician's Friend - seemed they were gonna have 'em ready to ship faster than BSW, so I canceled the BSW order.

I was SOOO not sold on the idea that something so small and cheap could sound good.

I am here to officially eat crow.

I got the Micport Pro, and I can concur...it sounds awesome.

I normally travel with an MBox2 Mini, but the pres on it are so bad, I also carry a True P-Solo, all the cables, and power, etc, in a nice carry-on sized SKB case.

Only thing is, if I go out of town for 2-3 days ( and to New York VERY often ) that's alot of s*** to carry around...or drag through the subway...

So, unless I'm out of town for more than a couple of days or long weekend, I've been looking for a worthy replacement.

I have found it in TWO devices...both of which I am keeping for different reasons.

I think the Micport Pro is very good...and I know it will serve me well...

But, I also picked up the new DUET from Apogee...and it works so seamlessly with Apple's Logic Studio and Soundtrack Pro 2, that it really is an excellent piece of gear to have.

It's about the size of two ipods side-by-side, and not too much thicker...

All the controls ( except a big multi-function button on the top ) are taken care of in software...and if you are running Logic or Sound Track Pro 2, you can control those functions directly within the application!

It's a bit more expensive, but it's Apogee, and the sound-quality is really amazingly good.

So good, that I'm going to New York tomorrow, and I plan on doing all of my sessions from my hotel room using BOTH...just to see which one needs the least amount of tweaking.

I'll post up some shoot-out files when I get home.

Rock on
