By saying "or even" Queen LatifaH makes it sound like you're for some reason surprised she has talent. (???)
you'd be surprised.... there was a series (maybe 3-4) of "Aids Benefit CD's" Titles "Red,Hot and (the third word was related to the different genre's) all the artists were singing out of their element, and they were great.... to hear Sinead O'Connor..sing "Gershwins "Someone to Watch Over Me" or Mary J Blige ""Over The Rainbow"..they were really greatChuck said:nightfly61 said:or even Queen Latifa(who has a great voice).

Not at all. I'm sure she has talent, but she has also proven that she is very versatile in many genre's. Not everybody can pull that off.

This is not necessarily a good thing. I remember a TV special where only the songs were standards. Everything else was the same junk you hear on the radio today. They took perfectly good songs and wrecked them.hornet61 said:you'd be surprised.... there was a series (maybe 3-4) of "Aids Benefit CD's" Titles "Red,Hot and (the third word was related to the different genre's) all the artists were singing out of their element, and they were great.... to hear Sinead O'Connor..sing "Gershwins "Someone to Watch Over Me" or Mary J Blige ""Over The Rainbow"..they were really greatChuck said:nightfly61 said:or even Queen Latifa(who has a great voice).

Only thing wrong with the show were the flubs with the timeline, music & history-wise. I think NBC had it in for the show, as every other week it was not seen due to a Law & Order marathon, Christmas specials or sports. :-[
I personally don't see anything wrong with Michael Buble. What I do have a problem with is standards stations playing his AC stuff. Some of it sounds like it was done in the 70s and would fit okay, but there are a couple of songs that I just find annoying.elchupacabras said:I don't know why there is such an aversion to Lady Gaga singing with Tony Bennett. In fact, I dare say she sounds somewhere between Helen O'Connell and Keely Smith. She CAN sing standards, and I wish she'd do more of them.
If anything the weak sister among the crooners is Michael Buble. Buble, in my opinion, has a voice reminiscent of Johnny Mercer's, but much weaker. The only reason Buble gets any airplay is that he has had decent arrangements backing him up. He has little control over time and feel, and often jumps on top of the beat instead of syncopating and staying behind like a true jazz singer. Buble is the one who should have been blacklisted, NOT Gaga. Just my .02.
My wife and were big fans of "American Deams" also, I also noticed some discrepancies in the timeline... I am pretty anal when It comes to accuracy, but, the average viewer never caught the timeline error, because most of the time they don't know the artist, the year , etc. JJ from Dreams is on "Southland" on tuesday evenings on TNT,, which my wife and I enjoy also. We have season one of Dreams on DVD... that is all that is available to date..The worst offender of timeline errors is the movie "American hot Wax". One would think that being the bio-pic of the godfather of Rock N Roll DJ's (Alan Freed)it would more accurate , but no!!!Mike Sheridan said:nightfly61 said:I loved American Dreams. It didn't matter to me that it wasn't 100% historically correct. I loved the show and I think NBC had high hopes for it. They probably kept it on longer than they should have. The mass audience was just not into it. I tried to get friends to watch it but they wouldn't. Maybe it was too late to do a show about life in the '60's, it never did all that well in the ratings. It was what I call too good for TV.
Same thing with "Studio 60". Intelligent and funny, too good for TV, so what do we end up with? The absurd "30 Rock"That's what the public wants.
Buble's imperfections are not affecting his popularity and CD's Sales......I guess I don't have a technical ear, he , sounds pretty good to me...and you are right he has one hell of a arranger and orchestra....all young dudes too. I wish Michael Civisca and Peter Cincotti would get more airplay, and my gosh what happened the incredible Renee olstead..I don't hear her anymore, but, then again, we don't have a good source for that music in my hometown...we had one, but they let it slip away, that's what happens when you don't know the music , you flip it for something you think you have a better grasp of....elchupacabras said:I don't know why there is such an aversion to Lady Gaga singing with Tony Bennett. I liked "American Dreams" and "Studio 60" too. But "30 Rock" wins lots of Emmys and Golden Globes. Absurd must be good.Mike Sheridan said:nightfly61 said:I loved American Dreams.
