Lafayette: A two news source town

There's a story on indianaairwaves.net about News Channel 18 leaving the AMP stations for Shurz. It's a blow to AMP, I guess, but I find it kind of ironic, because Shurz used to be THE place for aspiring newshounds to land in the 80s and 90s. Now they're leaving their reporting to TV. 18's cast is OK, but I guess if I really want to learn about Lafayette's news I should get ahold of a copy of the Journal & Courier. Chris Nolte, didn't you used to be part of that awesome Shurz newsteam?

I worked for the WASK stations twice, the first time during Henry Rosenthal's era (for Mike Piggott before he left for TV18) and again in the mid and late '80s before Shurz bought the stations. Max Showalter (who's now working for the J&C) was newsroom boss back then. When Piggott was ND, there were five fulltime news reporter-anchors there including Mike (the TV18 ND, Chris Morrisse and her chief producer, Wally Hubbard, worked at WASK back then, too). Max also had five newspeople on hand, including myself and Sue Scott (who's now TV18's chief anchor). I think that, at the time, WASK had the biggest radio newsroom (or one of the biggest) outside of Indy.

Well, that's of course all ancient history, and now WBAA Public Radio has the biggest news team. Three people.

Very true wradiochick and sadly our local tv station seems to get worse. Still totally unable to pull off a newscast without a number of errors and/or glitches. I very seldom watch anymore. Did anyone see 18's live coverage of the Bill Clinton visit? Lots of time to prepare. Train wreck. Was there even a radio station there? I doubt it.

I remember the WASK election coverage and other big news events that were always covered professionally. Even WAZY had a competent news staff but that has probably been close to 20 years now. Sign of the times I guess.
