Lafayette Radio

word on the street is that Independence Media of Peoria has been extremely chipper about their new Indiana purchase. hmmmm
 
College kids have never been a lucrative market for radio. There are only so many bars and pizza shops (the bas can't legally serve most of them.) Aside from that, in four years or less, most of them are gone. No real brand loyalties because they aren't around long enough to build them.
 
Besides, all of the college kids listen to WBAA and WBAA-FM.

Well, I thought that was the intent of college stations. That and enhancing the communications programs at the schools. Something went wrong there, too.
 
FWIW, I'm not sure everyone knows this but, Purdue University students are not be targeted by Arbitron unless they are a Lafayette/West Lafayette resident.

Currently, the only Indiana property they have is WNUY in Bluffton, which seems to market Fort Wayne.

Does anyone know the background of this company? It seems to be expanding at an accelerated pace. According to their website, they also have an AM news/talk station in Miami, 4 stations in Peoria, and pending purchases in Wyoming and Kentucky.

If they do purchase Lafayette, it would be interesting to see what kind of changes they'd make.
 
Was anyone around in the late 80's and early 90's when WAZY played a lot of urban and dominated the market? That was a totally different time and of course the music that was considered urban then would not be now. But, everything is cyclical and who knows how a format like that may perform if done right today in Lafayette. All that aside, technology has changed all of our habits and people just aren't listening to the radio like they used to anymore.

I'd have to see some hard numbers about college kids listening to WBAA and WBAA-FM.

Every college kid I know listens to music off of an I-Pod or a free downloading service.

WBAA and WBAA-FM isn't targeting college kids either. You might as well say WKOA has mostly a black audience.

You misunderstood my post. The part I quoted was exactly my point. IMO, one or both of them should be targeting the university students.

Sorry. When you wrote "Besides, all of the college kids listen to WBAA and WBAA-FM", I thought that was from you.

In their defense, both stations aren't hiding their formats and it's up to college kids to be intellectual enough to make that choice. If they enjoy music that's played at the Neon Cactus, it may be because their taste in music stinks and/or they are 18-22-year-old college kids.

I'd have less respect for the WBAA's if they had a special "Hip Hop Corner" feature right after Garrison Keilor in the morning. They are what they are and lack flexibility anyway because the dollars and the content are controlled by Purdue.
 
I read some info on Lafayette radio, and they ARE the hardest market to sell in. Forget the sales, they should go for ratings. If it's already hard to sale in the city, you might as well make an attempt at ratings. If AMP does sale its Lafayette cluster, the new owner will and should go for ratings. If the demographic is lured in, making the sale should be slightly easier. I would love to see the city get what it needs. I would relocate there to get in on the action. Is there a SURE buyer for the AMP cluster? Or, is it all speculation up to this point? I would hate to see what happens to all competition if they did get a RHY station. Or, better yet, a locally owned sports show. Talk about lights out... ::)
