Lafayette-West Lafayette News?

Any news in the Lafayette-West Lafayette area? I remember discussing a RadioWorks buyout a few months back. What's the status on that situation? Also, driving through the Lafayette area I noticed yard signs for a new station, 97.7 WTGO. What’s the format and who’s the owner? That’s a pretty decent spot on the FM dial and I don’t recall it being occupied before. If anyone has any info on this new station, it'd be greatly appreciated. PEACE!

Closest 97.7 I'm aware of is in Rennselear, I heard they changed formats but I don't know about call letters (WLQI).

WTGO is a low power station operated by a local church. YAWN!!!!

Come on. It's not that bad. When I last came through Lafayette, WTGO had a Christian Rock format, which is not found on the airwaves *anywhere* in Central Indiana - it could use some better programming though. Because it seemed like a playlist set to "shuffle" with a few liners tossed in. And quite a few spots for the church's coffee shop. If they would get someone to program it a bit more professionally (and maybe add a bit of rap along with the rock) I think it would help. I think WCWC in Marion is the better Christian Rock LPFM station. I do however applaud WTGO for at least being local, even if they're not live or staffed.

Now, 97.3 - sounded to me like every other Christian station around. Slow, laid-back Praise & Worship / Inspirational.

The most disappointing LPFM to me is the one we have in Kokomo, WJJD, that *finally* made it back on the air after suffering unspecified "technical difficulties" for around six months. The station apparently carries the Radio 74 Internationale www.radio74.net network 24/7. Nothing but hymns and preaching, and the network believes that the even the kind of music WFRN plays (which is pretty tame by all accounts) is sinful and harmful to the soul.
I don't deny WJJD's right to exist, but it would be nice to have some local content, and I fail to see that the station adds much to the radio landscape that we won't have soon enough anyway when CSN and AFR fire up their blowtorches.

Does First Assembly of God run WTGO?
______________

Harvest Chapel on Wabash Avenue. Affiliated with Chuck Smith's Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa CA. White Horse Christian Center operates the other at 97.3.

I wonder why John Balvich (WLQI) didn't protest this LPFM....or why he didn't figure out earlier that the freq. was open in Lafayette.

That amazes me....now he really is pinned to do Farm reports forever!

1. LPFM stations aren't completely protected against a full power FM move-in.

2. Can a full power signal be shoehorned in? Or given the other (full power) stations that need to be protected, is it impossible to move a full power FM further in?

Really doubt 97.7 could be a Lafayette move in (aside from that, doesn't Balvich own 98.1 in Earl Park)?

From what I understand, WLQI could have been moved farther south if Balvich waivered himself to allow the interference with WIBN. However, I think he wants WLQI to remain a Rensselaer radio station.

As for Balvich allowing the LP on 97.7 in Lafayette to come on the air, I don't even think he was aware of it. Although if he knew how much the new station was going to affect the coverage of WLQI to the south, I would think that he would have petitioned to deny the CP. Currently, you can't even get WLQI very much outside of Jasper county to the south. WTGO-LP fights hard with WLQI even at the WIBN studios, some 20 miles away from the WTGO-LP transmitter. WLQI used to come in at WIBN fairly well.
Edited by Apollo79 on 07/26/05 05:29 PM.

Pretty much as long as WLQI does an adequate job in Jasper County, that's all that counts. We have a similar situation with 97.7 in Cincainnati and Dayton with WOXY taking some hits to the north from the Huber Heights LPFM combo (2 entities still fighting it out as to who actually has the license, by the way).
Just like 80-90 cutting the coverage of a lot of the high powered stations,(remember being able to get a lot of Chicago stations on a good tropo day?) LPFM is doing the same with the Class A's.
______________
