Lake Erie Monsters

The Lake Erie Monsters will once again have split flagship stations, with WHKW 1220 and WKNR 850 splitting the 76 games right down the middle.

Also, 1220 will slide some games over to sister station WHK 1420 when conflicts occur, and 850 will slide some daytime games over to 1540 KNR2.

On TV, FSO and WUAB will each show 5 games.

Doug Plagens is the play by play man for all games--working solo on the radio, and joined by Jock Callander and Kenny Roda on TV.

The TV games will be simulcast on the radio.

What conflicts are there on 1220? Do they broadcast other sporting events? I don't listen to 1220, so pardon my ignorance.

They have some college sports, but I think it's more that they don't want to interrupt certain paid-for religious programming..

Simple answer nobody cares about minor league hockey. That is why they are split. If broadcasting religious programming bills higher that should tell you where minor league hockey ranks. Indoor soccer ranks about the same nowadays.

I wonder if the Monsters are paying to be on 1220/1420. And would they pay more or less than the preachers?

Remember, Salem is the company that had a winner in Dave Ramsey, but decided one day to start charging him. In a story we had thanks to a reader asking them about it, Ramsey's people basically said paying for airtime isn't something they did, and zap, there went Dave Ramsey off of 1220, 1440 and 880 in Columbus.

I'll have to go through the 1220 schedule to see what is on, when they move the Monsters to 1420. I do find it hard to imagine Dan Gilbert paying for airtime, but...

And Dave further expanded on this on a recent Entreleadership podcast. Ed Atsinger saw the numbers of the Dave Ramsey Show and got greedy. That was when the plug was pulled on the Salem stations. Sort of got me in trouble over at the holier than thou board as well. Only market that didn't get the Ramsey show back, through other outlets, was Cleveland. And before Keith Kennedy corrects me, the show is carried on WHLO.

There is also a Dave Ramsey Channel on I Heart Radio.

1220 also airs St. Ignatius football (split with sister stations WHK and 95.5 The Fish), Bowling Green football, and CSU basketball (split with WHK), so that would explain some of the mix and matching.
