Landecker on WLS? You heard that right, Chicago

I remember when John was filling in overnights on WLS in 1972. As I recall, it was when Joel Sebastian left for WMAQ. I even have a cassette tape of it. Don't know if it would disintegrate if I thied to play it, though. I wish I had airchecks of John from the mid 1960s in Michigan. There is one online of John doing news. He was VERY GOOD even then.

I thought I was in heaven when I first tuned in to their online stream and heard the classic John Records Landecker jingle from about 1975! Then I heard his voice and knew it was heaven! ;D

Now, if they'd get the online stream synced up correctly so the filler commercials don't start and end in the middle of the song! :'(

SC--if you ever dig up that overnight aircheck of Landecker on WLS, I'd like to hear it. We can work out a trade if you ever locate it.

It's "unscoped" and has a lot of skywave fades, radioman. "I'd Love You To Want Me" by Lobo and "Thunder And Lightning" by Chi Coltrane were on it. And possibly "A Brand New Key" by Melanie, as John made a cryptic comment about "a brand new Joel Sebastian". I didn't have a tape recorder of any kind when John was on WTRX 1330 as "Dow Jones" in Summer, 1966. That would be worth something.

Well if you ever find it, I'd like to hear it. Thanks

That's a cool page...especially with the WGN talent from back then.

Strange thing is the first name that shows up on those pages is Donald Getz at WGN. His son, Larry Getz, owned WTRX 1330 Flint (where John Landecker worked in 1966) for a while in the 1980s. Jack Hood (first to splice Barbra and Neil together before the cease and desist order) worked at both WGN and WTRX. Wally Kennedy (later at WSB (AM) and Philadephia TV) worked at two 1330s, WEAW and WTRX, early in his career.

I found no easy way to search that document.

By the way, WOAI should read WOIA (102.9 in Ann Arbor) in John's radio resume from 1973. No, John did not work for Clear Channel Communications' first Clear Channel station, WOAI, in 1965.

Do you, radioman148, or anyone have suggestions on avoiding cassette tape disintegration or breakage, and recording these onto another tape or digitally with a minimum of distortion or loss of the original material? There might be just one chance, so if there is a machine out there that puts minimum stress on the tape, let me know. I have other tapes that have come off the rollers. I know there are repair kits, but they are getting hard to find. Then there's those ones that just plain disappeared. Are they just in the wrong case? I'm just glad there are no bulk tape erasers around!

Same question for those old 3 1/4 amd 3 inch reel to reel tapes. Are there any machines designed for minimal tape stress?

Well as far as the cassettes are concerned I keep mine in a cool storage area. As far as what kind of machines are best to use I'm not an expert.
I would suggest that you make sure that whatever machine(s) you're using for transfer are operating properly.
For digital transfer I use the software program "Total Recorder". Others may have a better program.

Thanks, radioman148. I will continue to try to remember where the cassette is with John Records Landecker, in what was apparently very early in his time with WLS. I think I had set a timer to turn on the radio/cassette recorder to tape WLS in a hopes of hearing the Xylophone Weather Sounder I described in another thread. I did tape the montage of songs at Midnight CST on January 1 for a number of years. Each year was squeezed into about one minute. For some reason, none of the tapes had a really solid signal. It seems I tried using preamps and external antennas inductively coupled to the Sony Radio/Cassette Recorder, but none eliminated the skywave fading. I asked Art Vuolo if he knew of any airchecks or surveys with "Dow Jones" from WTRX on them, but so far none have surfaced. The aircheck from WOIA which is available online has John Landecker doing news, and Art Vuolo as the Disk Jockey.

The events described in John Landecker's newscast occurred on June 11, 1967, the end of the Six Day War, and the 24 Hours Of Le Mans automobile race. This was a Sunday, as evidenced by various references, and the fact that Ed Sullivan videos for that date are on YouTube.

"John's Pick" Hit Of The Week WILS Lansing, MI 1968-Strangely enough by Chicago's Buckinghams!

Since this is where John was in 1968 the best I can figure, I assume John is John Landecker. He is also listed where the late night, overnight, weekend DJs would be listed, after the daytime shifts. My understanding is that as a rookie and MSU student, this is the type of shift he worked at the first station he worked with the call letters W, L, and S in them!

John was ahead of the curve on this pick! "Back In Love Again" by The Buckinghams. Listen to this and tell me that the piano and horns are not reminiscent of Chicago's "Make Me Smile" two years later. Wikipedia claims that James William Guercio had already left the Buckinghams, but it's hard to believe when you hear this track.
