Landscape changes EVERYWHERE!!!

Forced listening. Hidden contesting utilizing social and traditional medias. Non traditional revenue events. Solid sales and programming staffs, a dedication to community service... Oh, yeah and a format the is desireable to the community.
Mix it up in a bowl... heat for 2 months... let stand for 2 more to develop some color... Freeze for 5 months and then thaw and let stand for 3 months and prepare to repeat! New ingredients might have to be added as the recipie needs constant attention and care!

Hey 12 in a Row what does "formats will be allowed to fail to find success" mean. You lost me there. I'm a bit slow and old. Can you explaine further?

Splicer..I'm curious are you in radio or how long has it been since you've been out? I asked because you seem to have a lot of info on a lot of related subjects

I read something a while back in a trade or blog that I think is coming true regardless of what current ownership beleives... "Radio is set for a RE-SET not a Recovery". Changes have to be made systemically to the way things are done now and expectations have got to be tempered from the days of exponential growth.

Radio is far from alone. Just about every industry is on a reset. Automotive at the top.
At least we've learned from this, you can't go back to the way it was and expect the same results.

A point that still seems to be lost on many of the posters on these boards who seem to think that if only stations went with live, local jocks 24/7 that played requests, did lost dog reports & ran swap shop on Saturday morning we'd lure a new generation of listeners away from their webstreams & mp3 players and usher in a new golden age of radio. It's a different world today, and even if someone stumbles on a format that appeals to the under 25 audience, most of us old timers probably won't like it anyway.

Old Bones: Love your optomism! However, A lot of what you say is valid. You can't go back to the days of "Lost Dog Reports" and "Live Swap shows"...etc. Although those could be elements of a successful rebirth of a station. The MP3 players and webstream competition could be turned around and made to be an asset. The top 2 MP3 players are offering FM and FM/HD radio tuners. Give the listeners in your community something entertaining and compelling. Give them a reason to listen and get involved in the station and what the station is doing in the community and build a listenership base that advertisers will want to reach. Make it affordable for the advertisers and give them results and you'll build it back up listner by listener... advertiser by advertiser... It won't happen overnight. But the GOLDEN AGE of radio you reference may be ushered in even maybe before you and I head to the big control room in the sky! Oh, one more thing. People are KEY to making it happen. Not live jocks 24/7 like it was before, but a healthy balance of live and voice tracked but if you invest in people you'll grow faster and stronger. Just my opinion.
