Langer to buy back WBIX

R

From All Access (9/28):

ALEX LANGER is buying back troubled WBIX-A/BOSTON from its court-appointed receiver for $1.5 million, assumption of $433,000 in debt, and forgiveness of the $7.5 million LANGER is still owed by BRAD BLEIDT, who is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to mail fraud charges. LANGER, who sold the station to BLEIDT three years ago, has been operating the station under an LMA with receiver DAVID VICINANZO since DECEMBER; the repurchase includes an agreement to pay the receiver 25% of any amount received over $10 million if the station is resold within three years.

If he doesn't do something drastic to improve the signal, he's just throwing good money after bad.

I don't think anything more can be done for that signal on that frequency. The day signal is 40,000 watts and actually covers a lot of ground. It's strong in the entire metro-west and Boston west suburbs, and isn't really all that bad in Boston proper (unless you're inside or in between large office buildings). It also gets the inland north and south suburbs fairly well. I don't think they can put any more power toward Boston without objections from WBZ.

The 2,500 watt night signal is strictly metro-west for half-decent reception, and I don't think they could increase it due to KYW and other factors. I heard that it was a major project to get a night signal and pattern approved for that frequency at all.

Re: Langer to buy back WBIX (by REAL raccoonradio)

hi--first of all, this is Bob Nelson, the _real_ raccoonradio (with two c's). I object to the fact that someone has registered a name very close to mine
(only one c). This is impersonation. I have reported this post to a moderator.
And I just clicked on the profile for "racoonradio" and saw that he has been
banned from posting already.

Please pick a name that isn't so close to mine, OK? Thanks.
As for whatever format WBIX will have, I thought I read in either the
Herald or the Globe that he plans to keep it business radio.

Eli has it nailed. Between overlap with WBZ and having to protect KYW, WBIX is wedged pretty tight. The day signal is a monster;even audible in some parts of
RI. I've noticed this on visits back home.

That station would have beenbetter if you could get the signal IN BOSTON!! I listened to it all the time but new format just isn't to my liking.

What's the purpose of the temp. fake names?

The problem is R-I.com allows users to create alternative names for themselves, when all one needs to do to find out who is really behind the post is check the user ID. What's the purpose of the temp. fake names?

Here's a thought... what if Langer were to put a full-service AC on the air with a few known FM personalities of AC radio (maybe some former or current folks from WBMX/WXLO/WSRS)? A heavy emphasis on local news of communities in metrowest? I seem to recall a good format that didn't last too long on WKOX for a few years in the 80s that seemed to serve metrowest very well.

There's too much news/talk/sports on AM in Boston as it is. If that doesn't work, then I guess Langer could go to a full blown hispanic station. <P ID="signature">______________

I'll agree that the AM dial is very talk-heavy, but what else can you do there (except possibly ethnic)? It's been 20 years since you could do full-service AC period...let alone on AM. What few such stations that still exist are heritage stations in small markets...name even one in a top 50 market.

Except for, of course, WATD on the South Shore and oldies with WBOQ on the North Shore...
