I'm considering buying a laptop computer and using a PCDJ
software for dances and parties.

Is it:
a) a good system?
b) worth spending the money on this?
c) better than using CDs? MP3 sound vs Wav?

Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks!

Here's what I would get - and I've done this a looooong time with this laptop approach. Software - a program called BPM Studio - it costs more than PCDJ, but it's as professional you can get for mp3 playback for under 500 bucks. Plus it has better memory / audio driver management so it doesn't stutter / crash like PCDJ will (known from experience directly testing the two). Now the only problem is BPM Studio doesn't play napster DRM files yet, but I've talked to the folks in Germany, and they say they have a version that will coming out in the next month or so. When they get that out, get your napster account and download all the songs ya want to your laptop under that blanket 10 bucks a month deal - and ya should be setup pretty well. It is worth spending the money on and sound quality for the 128kb mp3 files on our Yorkville system (about 6 grand worth of loudspeakers is fine - and yes I'd know the difference, but the tradeoff works for the convenience of showing up with a 10 lb laptop with all your music and playlists on it vs dragging in all the alternative equipment).

Which BPM studio software do you use?
I'm not a computer tech -- just use them alot.

Hi,

I'm new here, and just read this quite older topic.

I'm using a program that's called Dance Boost Media Mixer. It looks like BPM Studio and PC DJ, but it's better priced..'cause it's free! The software was built for some school project by a Dutch student.

Some features are even better than BPM's. Besides live mixing it can also play non-stop by itself. It's not like it's mixing a couple of seconds before the ending of the track, but it can 'listen' itself where it should mix.

If you haven't bought BPM already, you should take a look at it, now it's still free.I thought the site was danceboost.com, but you better google it, 'cause i'm not really sure.

Best system I've seen is OTS DJ.

Store music AND videos. Playback to an amp and big screen televisions from a laptop. Does everything.

I too vote for ots.

I've used it on 4 24/7 part 15 radio stations for over 3 years w/o any trouble at all.

In a month it will run a 24/7 closed circuit music on the tv sound/announcements and dvds on video channel that we are starting at a 100 bed nursing home.

Sometimes I program a week in advance and there is never a glitch.

Add another vote for Ots... I'm using it for my own music collection playback at home, and a friend of mine uses it for his party DJ service.

Yet one more vote for OTS DJ. I know of a couple of radio stations that use this full time including overnight. The only time it has stopped is when the play list runs out because someone forgot to build one. But when it comes to free. That's my favorite thing!!

I agree with my ots brothers. Great system with pretty decent segs out of the box. Only problem I had with it, is no id tags for my internet station. For what you are doing shouild be perfect. Also the support is great! They always get back to you within hours. I had a couple times I had to ask them to move it to another computer and they gave me another code without asking any questions. So yes another vote.

Another vote for OTS DJ!

Using one on an NCE, never a problem, bullet proof, and the students of this 700 watt powerhouse (ok, not really a powerhouse) can easily build playlists. It's compatable with ASIO drivers and supports .wav, mp3, and it's proporietary .ots file system.

Here's a support forum that will provide you PLENTY of info.

how do you get ots to play the station ID or stop sets without using their scheduler?

I believe you build them into a play list. If you backtime the items in the playlist you can get the ID to play pretty close to the top of the hour. There might be another way to do this I am not aware of.

With ots, I build the list so tightly that a TONE on the hour follows the legal id, then the hour is anounced eg; "It's 2 o'clock" a 3 second pause and the music resumes.

Doing this for 3 years.

Here's a question.....do any of these low cost or free programs accept RIFF? Many will accept id3 tags with mp3 files but I'd like to keep things in .wav files and utilize the RIFF embedded information.

Ots will automatically enter the song title and artist info from .wav files, so long as you name the files correctly. They must be named Artist - Title.wav, such as "Huey Lewis & The News - If This Is It.wav" (without the quote marks, of course).

I have two nightclubs using SAM broadcaster.....for DJ'ing events, I use Rane's Serato Scratch live...it allows me to haul out my turntables...mix and scratch like i'm using real vinyl without lugging around a billion crates..which I am sort of speaking..cuz if the record starts skipping..gets hung..so will the song..lol....

heres some youtube video of serato in action... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja9F63jeGOU
