LAradio.com to make major announcement on Monday (11.3.08)

I know Don has recently talked about stepping down from LARadio. I wonder if someone else is going to take it over? If that is the actual announcement, I'm thinking Steve Thompson may have a hand in the transition.

Bummer if he retires. He's been on the laradio.com beat since September 1997, the longest of all daily radio bloggers in Southern California. When he retires, who's going to take his place?

Don't know who would take over, if anyone does at all. The real problem is that Barrett has built up a relationship with LA area broadcasters and gained their trust, now someone else could come in and would have to build up that kind of trust, not always an easy task. If he does step down, well you knew it would happen someday, nothing is forever.

Sounds much the same as the recent retirement of Robert Feder of THE CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. Generally, when he reported on the media in Chicago, you could "take it to the bank".

I wouldnt necessarily call having his column cut from the paper as retirement.. thats called being fired.

that's good to know: however, Feder retired. his choice.

He is giving one month of his subscription site away this month for free.

No mention of him stepping down, although he started off his article with a review of the history of laradio.com, which may give the impression of where his mind is at in the overall scheme of things.

Not exactly. He accepted a buy-out as the paper has downsized, like most dying newspapers. His other choice was being forced out.

The information that laradio.com said it was OK to cut and paste is:

If you are a fan of Los Angeles radio – current and past - LARadio.com would like to invite you to read about the daily activities of Southern California radio. Go to www.LARadio.com and click the Members Only link at the very top of the page. When the box comes up, insert the word “free” (no quotation marks) in the username and password sections. That’s it and you’re in. Please check back every weekday morning around 7 a.m. for the latest LARadio news. Enjoy!

Admittedly, I've let my subscription to L.A. Radio lapse so 'free for a month' is good news.

Don has threatened to retire many times and I'm sure he'll make good on that threat one day. A possible successor might be Scott St. James. I know Scott has contributed items to Don's website over the past few years and is an L.A. broadcaster with a long career.

Of course, with L.A. radio, and the radio business in general, being rapidly decimated of personnel, will there be anyone left to report on--I mean besides Ryan Seacrest?

I am very interested in this laradio.com website. I’ve visited the site several times, but my talking software can’t find the place to sign up for a subscription. How much is it to subscribe, and where do you do so. Please PM or email me with the details.

Thank you.
