Largest Radio News staff in Georgia

Okay, in the last couple of months I have heard promos for "largest radio news staff in Georgia" from both WSB and WYAY. I heard WSB use that phrase this week. I heard it on WYAY shortly after the new program director started.

So, which station has the largest radio news staff? How is it defined?

WSB might also be including AJC staff along with channel 2. I doubt that the Atlanta Business Chronicle's staff is larger than the AJC.

Lemme jump in here. I know for a fact that Cumulus/All News 106.7 is paying more anchor/reporter/editor salaries than Cox/WSB are. BUT- If you combine AJC/WSB-TV/WSB Radio against Fox 5/All News/ATLBizChron, you'll find that the Cox umbrella of news staff is larger.

As I said, both were careful to say "radio" news staff. I know that can mean anything. It is just fun to see how each team makes the definition work to their advantage. :)

Bottom line---listeners don't care. It's just more blah blah blah positioning by programmers who are still using the old textbook.

A station in my area once boasted they had the largest radio news staff - not just in town - but between New York and Washington. They hired a lot of part-timers and people starting out for just over minimum wage. The people they hired at to do board op duty (but they called it producing). Each person was able to and expected to produce one story each shift. But they had a big staff (and a lot of people got the first entry on their resume). That said, the other station in town had about one-third as many people, better paid and more experienced, they each produced three or four stories per shift and mostly ran rings around the big staff. The small staff station also got lots of resumes from people on the big staff.

In this area (like others) size doesn't matter as much as how you use it.

Another station of my acquaintance one claimed to broadcast from the state's largest radio news center. Radio shared space with TV at two stations. And they beat out the only other radio-only newsroom in town by a couple of square feet (if you included the news director's office and a production studio).

I've heard of stations "padding" their stafgf size by adding in the wire service's reporters.

Before all you posters freak out about Cheryl Castro, Melissa Carter, Mark Woolsey and Maria Boynton all being out today- it was because of this comp day/expiration "Use 'em before you lose 'em" rule Cumulus has in place. (doesn't work in all-news very well, does it??) And, no, AN1067 will not be flipping formats, going news/talk to fight off WGST's return, going to a new frequency, etc. Just getting ahead of the inevitable storm here.

It seems they have been doing the use it or lose it since December.

Because the M-F anchors have been filling so many holes on the weekends, there are lots of days to be used. And summer vacations will be coming up soon.... It's what happens when your staff isn't big enough.

AN 106.7 had another promo this morning touting the largest radio news staff and they had an interesting closing line: We Sound Better. Gee, was that a poke at WSB? ;D ;D

Probably a response for WSB's "For all news in the morning, it's WSB....all news WSB"

LOL probably was a jab and sure it will help them leapfrog the 22 other Atlanta radio stations ahead of them in the first week of April's ratings.

AN106.7 also has a promo stating, "Traffic news you can understand." I guess WSB could run a traffic promo stating they have "more complete reports every six minutes in the morning."

If it was, no average listener is going to notice.

Probably not, but it is fun for us. :)
