LARRY DIXON IN FINE FORM ON WBAP THIS WEEK

Wow, you give a guy some latitude and time to talk and interact and entertain, and you never know what might happen! Dixon sounds as good now on WBAP as he did on the KVIL of yesteryear. You take the shackles off him that forced him to only read liner cards at KLUV and The Oasis, and wow...some PERSONALITY-DRIVEN RADIO comes out of him! As my daddy Del Shannon once said, "Hats off to Larry"!!! GREAT job. Those that sounded the death knell for Larry's career months ago when he took over mornings at KOAI should listen in. This guy's not done yet.

Hmmm...now if we tried this with some other jocks in the market...trim back the spotload by 5 mins an hour, throw away the liner cards, and let these people TALK and INTERACT with the listeners...Nah, they'd start whining about being a PERSONALITY instead of a JOCK and would want real money for doing it. What a mess that'd create, unraveling the fine-tuned, cost-efficient framework that the corporations have spent years perfecting.

The format that some say constrains Hal Jay frees up Larry Dixon to be creative? What gives?

I know what you mean by that, but in the course of a news program, Hal/Larry does get a fairly decent amount of time to entertain, cut up, talk freely, etc, compared to anyone who's not hosting a talk show, and/or isn't named Terry, Kidd or Jody. In Larry's case, he was used to zero at CBS...so this must feel like the KVIL of the 80s to him this week, to have a few blocks of time to converse and finish a thought, without being backed up against 22-min stopsets and a stack of liner cards to get through first. Sure, maybe after a few years in that slot, Larry would feel "constrained," too, but I'm sure at this point, he's just happy to be on the air and to have some of that cherished latitude.

As for Hal, you could probably give him an 8-hour a day talk show, and he wouldn't go stale. Remember when he used to do both morning AND afternoon drive for several years.

I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to Larry Dixon for the past few days. His interactions with the rest of the morning staff gets smoother by the hour! It would be wonderful to see him take over the time slot of one of the syndicated talk programs that WBAP airs in the afternoons/evenings!

I say put em in the 6-9 slot, get rid of that whiner mark levin. Id rather listen to larry talk about something else than politics all day long..

That's exactly what I was thinking! My second choice would be to give him Limbaugh's spot . . . but I'm pretty sure that will never happen.

Larry definitely compliments WBAP. They would never move Rush ( regretably)Sean should go,but won't,he's a company guy. The others ? Mark Levin? SURE! Have Hal in morning drive, and Larry in afternoon drive. What a concept!

Move Larry to Levin's spot and then on top of that having to pay for him to have his own producer? -Never!

Yes if BAP had a brain they would go ahead and pull the trigger on this one instead of waiting for the supposed Citadel takeover to make any changes.

I have a feeling that if the Citadel thing ever does go through there is going to be a lot of shake-ups at good ole BAP.

Only time will tell. If WBAP has a brain indeed!

Gosh, 247 . . . would it really be that much more expensive that Levin's syndication fees to have Larry Dixon and a producer in the studio during that time slot. It seems to me like The Ticket has four or five guys in the studio doing live radio all day long!

I do have a serious feeling when the beancounters from citadel come in, they'll be heads-a-rollin'

24/7- You don't know nuthin.
Slambang- Not many heads to roll.
You will all be surprised by the changes when Citadel comes to town.
You might even want to have a resume and demo ready to submit.
Just sayin....

Sean

You may want to submit a resume..ELSEWHERE. Sorry kids Citadel like its cousins Cumeless, and Clear Channel.. love the Letter "C" and C means Cuts. Ask the folks in Atlanta. It would be a great gig if you desire to work cheap, never excel. and have no desire for promotion.

Larry sounds incredible on WBAP. If I didn't know better I would have thought he had been doing it for years...
I know Hal is probably very secure, but if BAP could find a place for Larry, I think he'd be a brilliant addition.

Is that Elton's bitter fingers I hear?

I'm not disagreeing with ya, but since you've named the corporate parents (or soon to be parents) of a huge chunk of the top 20 stations in DFW, whodo you think IS worth working for?

I know the chances are probably slim, but I'd love to see BAP dump Limbaugh. Give Hal either an extra hour in the morning, or let him start at 6 instead of 5. Start Mark Davis at 10 a.m. with an hour of local, his national show at 11 and noon, come back local at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., carry Hannity live (I assume he's tape delayed) until he goes off at 5 p.m. and put Dixon on in a 5-7 or 8 slot. You industry guys know a lot more about optimum time slots than I do, but you get the idea, even if my timings are a little off. I just would rather listen to 'BAP on the drive home over KRLD, but I need the traffic reports. And, I can't stand Hannity, even though I know he's a huge draw.

Whatever 'BAP does -- including keeping Limbaugh, I hope they get that crappy "Great One" off immediately.

And by the way, I think everyone on this board is a Great American.....

AMEN to that last comment. I'd listen to Larry over that drug-addict any day of the week. But there's no way any station would dump him. Even with as many ppl hating him as they do what are we all on this board doing? -Talking about him and BAP. Half of the listeners love him, and even more tune in just to hear the next wild and crazy thing he might spew.
