Larry Hagman Has Died

I never watched Dallas but I watched I Dream Of Jeannie. NBC initially filmed it in black and white. They didn't want to waste money on color because nobody at the network thought the show would be successful. It ran for five years.

Hagman occasionally did his grocery shopping while wearing a gorilla suit. Oh yeah, just a typical nice normal Hollywood celebrity!

What I'm curious about is whether (or how) the death of Larry Hagman will be dealt with on the re-booted TNT version of "Dallas".

I would hope that somehow the death would be written in as part of the plot...it COULD make for a very interesting plot twist.

I would be quite disappointed if the role were re-cast. Hagman was an original.

Keep in mind, the idea had been to have Hagman, Duffey, etc. reprise their roles to draw in viewers and introduce the next generation of characters....then have the older ones phased out. They have a plan in place and I'm sure considered this sad end as a possibility. I also think he filmed a number of episodes for the upcoming season before he died. Those will be TV gold for TNT.

I don't think they could or would recast the role. Even though the focus is supposed to be on the younger generation, the older generation has still had substantial storylines (Sue Ellen for Governor; Bobby with a cancer scare and drilling or not drilling on the ranch; JR in various deals). Larry Hagman did already film several episodes for Season 2. I wouldn't be surprised if they continued whatever storyline(s) he's in by keeping him off camera and using his death as the Season 2 cliffhanger.

Remember, after actor Jim Davis (Jock Ewing) died during the 4th season of the original series, his character was kept alive offscreen for many many weeks. And I think Jock finally died the following season in a helicopter crash. If they didn't recast that role, they certainly wouldn't recast JR. Hopefully, they learned their lesson when they recast Miss Ellie back around 83-84. Barbara Bel Geddes was recovering from heart surgery so they brought in Donna Reed, a major miscast in my opinion.

I wonder if there will even be a need for a Season 2 cliffhanger...is this show going to survive without JR? I'd love to know what percentage of the Season 1 audience also watched the original and is more interested in the older generation.

That's what I worry too...as someone who is a younger viewer (My mom actually went into labor with me during an episode late in Dallas 1.0's run), the "older" cast was what really carries the show IMO, especially J.R. I did watch Season 1 with my mom, and one of her selling points was seeing the old gang back. That said, I think the "next generation", especially J.R. the 3rd and Christopher, have the talent to keep the show going. For how long though is the true question.

Well, Larry Hagman was not in every episode of the first season, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray carried the heavy load there and they have fairly significant story lines especially with Sue Ellen running for Governor.

Maybe, once Larry Hagman's episodes have aired, that will give more airtime for Ray and Lucy to stop by for more than a minute every other episode. ;D

Also, maybe they'll have an on-air funeral for JR. That'd be a reason to bring back Gary Ewing from California (Knot's Landing). The possibilities are endless.

I have this delicious picture rolling around in my head of what an on-air funeral for "JR" might be like....including the possibility of Ken Kercheval's "Cliff Barnes" attempting to crash the funeral in order to stir up trouble...

And another scene in which the Ewing family is gathered around some lawyer's desk for what would have to be the most entertaining "Reading Of the Will" scene in many many years, as the family learns how "JR" is to dispose of his worldly goods.

OH!....the plot possibilities are almost endless ! ! !

I was thinking The City of Dallas would probably build a statue of J.R. somewhere in Downtown Dallas to symbolize how great this city is to J.R. and the actor who plays him-Larry Hagman. Hagman was a born and bred native Texan who fits the role of J.R. very well-like a glove.

I discovered reruns of the show on WGN America, although I had seen episodes of the show earlier. Now I've seen all but one, one which I lost because my TiVo deleted it in the middle of my watching it to record something else. I had no idea it was that full and I changed TVs before being warned.

But those black and white years were really good quality, both in writing and acting.

Mr. Hagman still gave quality performances even after the show got silly.

Last night's "Hart of Dixie" had a character being considered for a CEO position in Dallas. Interesting ...

They did this on The CW's "90210". As on "Smallville", the adults seem to have gotten turned into trombones (Charlie Brown reference).

It was another site where I said this.

I started watching after the cliffhanger the season after "Who Shot J.R." The previous season I only watched until we found out, but I came back and never left.
