Larry Munson Retires

Or from the title of a book by Lewis Grizzard, a great American, "Munson is gone and I don't feel too good myself."

Another memorable Munson broadcast (at least to me) was of a Florida game in the late 60's. Must have been a hurricane or something in Jacksonville because he groused the entire time about the lousy rain and how terrible the footing was on the field and how everybody was dropping the ball. Georgia wasn't dropping that many of them and it was one of those blow-outs over Florida. Towards the end of the 4th quarter. when Dooley was just letting the guys slog through the mud and mire, Munson got bored and started giving play-by-plays of the fights going on the stadium between football plays. It was hilarious. Memories, memories …

It's almost like Harry Carray doing a game half- lit. I wounder if Munson ever threw back a few before he entered the booth in his younger days.

Stu Dio's recall of the Munson-Dizzy Dean "era" on the Braves Radio Network is right on target. Larry told me that story himself. To hear Larry tell it, Dean never gave a c---
about the Braves and never did much more than show up for the broadcasts. It wasn't all that long before the Braves teamed Milo Hamilton and Ernie Johnson Sr., hoping listeners would forget Munson and Dean.

Why is Larry not staying around to do a post game show or interviews? Is he really that ill now?

That is very sad...... :'( :'( :'( Larry has always been so good. What is the name of the other guy who has been on there about 60 years... Loran???? he still sounds the smae as he has always. Will he do some play by play? Is Larry able to speak at all now?

You have obviously never heard a game called by Harry Carey. He was never half-lit. Harry was in the bag 162 games a year.

True story: I was 15-years-old and walking down Rush Street with my buddy Danny who lived right around the corner. At 10:30 am, Harry Carey stumbles out of a bar. He literally bumps into me, hits Danny, then a parking meter, asks if we are okay and jumps in a waiting car with the tags “WGN 9.” Later in the day, we watch the end of another Cubs drubbing with Harry calling a game showing no ill effects. That is a pro.

Rumor has it that Rodney Ho has one beer and can’t even remember the names of the cast of "Ocean’s 11."

It's so sad that this particular season, when Georgia has so much potential, is when Larry Munson was forced to retire.

Regarding Harry, I went to a Cubs game in 1997. Well, there was supposed to have been a game. After about an hour of rain, with buckets of water leaking to the lower from the upper deck, the game was postponed before it started.

But what made the day worthwhile is that as the fans were leaving, Harry Carey got on the PA system and asked the fans to join him in singing "Take me out to the ballgame." It made that day memorable.

This is the first I've heard about Munson being forced to retire. I figured he had until he decided he didn't want to do it anymore.....
The first game I heard him call this season he sounded tired. He didn't have that characteristic vigor - he sounded like he wasn't feeling well. But then....he sounded pretty doggone good for a 86 year old guy who's worked in radio for 60 years.
I'm not a Georgia fan but I am a Larry Munson fan. Whenever it snows I always tell the kids "there's sugar fallin' from the sky...." That's always been one of my favorite Larry Munson lines.
Whenever it snows I'll think of Munson and remember when -

"Lorne, whaddaya got?" "There's sugar falling from the sky!" They might've gotten rid of Larry, but he lives on in his legendary catch phrases.

I'd vote for Munson Field at Sanford Stadium.

I engineered remotes at WSB and 680 in the early 90s.. had a lot of fun with Munson, Van Note, Dimino. Those guys were crazy.. When I was a kid back in Huntsville.. we got TV from Nashville and Birmingham. Munson did play by play for Vanderbilt before he came here.. also did a fishing show up there.. Munson Outdoors. mid to late 60s. Those were the days!

Devotion to Accuracty Departmen:
In 1977, Harry was with the Southside Hitmen at Old Comiskey. Jack Brickhouse was at The Friendly Confines.

First we lost Skip Cary, now Larry Munson retires. Who will it be tomorrow...Paul Harvey? Rush Limbugh? Neil Bootz? Who? Who?

In 2008 we've seen Rhubarb Jones,Skip Carray and Larry Munson leave the air waves. three great broadcasters in one year unbelieveable.

Out of your list, Paul Harvey is probably the next. Has he come back on the air yet? I have quit listening to his time slot since he has been gone for so long.

Paul Harvey is back, part time. He's heard on the ABC Radio Network about 3 times a week, either doing morning commentary or mid-day.
Ron Chapman and Paul Jr. fill in elsewhere. I believe Paul Jr. has been handling TROTS. Good

Day!

Guess that shows how long it's been since I checked him out. I have been listening to Paul Harvey since WCEH down in Hawkinsville. Anyone else trying to do his show is like putting a saddle on a pig, it just don't fit.
