Larry Munson to Retire?

Today's AJC has an article about Larry Munson's increasing health problems. It says the problems are causing Larry to seriously ponder retirement. In fact, he's not sure whether he'll do the games this fall. Of course, everyone hopes that won't be the case.

The article mentions that Larry hopes Scott Howard will get a shot at the job when the time comes. And Howard is making no secret of his desire for the job when Larry decides to call it quits.

Scott Howard woudl be an excellent choice if they are looking in house. I ahve met him at some 750 events and he is very cordial and I think does a nice job with what air time he is afforded.
Buck and Kincade were talking about this yesterday after the story broke in the AJC and Kincade was saying that there is no way that they would hire one guy to replace Munson. His theory was that it would be a play by play guy with a traditional color analyst. Made me wonder if he knows something and that analyst will be Belue?

Scott Howard would be the logical choice.

Many here may not be aware of this, but he is the PBP guy for other UGA sports, has been for years.

I hope he gets it!

As much as I love Larry Munson, I would not want him sitting in the press box calling games if he were in debilitating pain. I’m not that greedy. But, if he were able to be made comfortable at Sanford Stadium and do only the home games this season, then the new guy <coughScottHowardcough> could cut his teeth on the away games, we could all get used to him (as much as we can), and Larry would get to ride out in a flurry of tributes and glory.

I’m betting, though, that the “new guy” will actually be a two-man team. And they’d be crazy to not pursue Buck Belue. What UGA fan in his right mind would reject Belue on the broadcasts?

I hope Larry hasn't already called his last game for UGA because he's one of the best in the business and I would hate to see him go.

Now, I have images of sugar falling out of the sky in my head.

bclark, I agree 100%. I have no thoughts of my own here, other than best of luck to Larry.

I'm a huge fan I have to say i'd rather hear scott howard and hondo call the games. if you watched the red and white games on sportsouth you got an idea of how buck belue calls games. He can host a great talkshow but game calling isn't his forte

my own personal feelings are both of selfish desire for him to go on broadcasting, yet understanding if he feels the need to retire. i've loved munson since i was a kid. His voice is like no other, gravelly and inspired, as he calls thegames, screams his heart out with us, and feels each win and loss just a furiously as your most ardent dawg fan.

I'm hoping he'll get better. But at the same time I've been preparing myself (yes, really) for the fact that he will one day not be with us. I beseiged heaven for a double portion of his spirit as was done in the old testament with elijah but so far God has been less than cooperative.

I pray for his health and longevity.
That's all you can do I guess

OK....the AJC runs a story that an 84 year old man with health issues might not be able to work a full schedule. But, then again, he might.

Larry Munson might retire. And he might not.

What a non-story.

Is it less of a story than Clark Howard saying he might run for mayor, but then again he might not? We've all heard about his possible mayoral ambitions before. Yet you participated in that thread.

Larry Munson's possible retirement is a big story because though it's been rumored for years, fans didn't think it was an imminent possibility, especially this year. So despite his age, it was kind of a wake-up call to many.

I think you're just groggy from that trip to Charleston.

Maybe a ploy to get Larry votes in the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame? LOL In all honesty and seriousness I have just come back from a visit to San Antonio. I am a huge Munson fan and to see him retire will sadden me greatly. Saturday afternoons and evenings will never be the same without him whether retired or passed on.

With this possible news I suggest that WSB take some of the talk repeats this summer and replace them with Nunson highlights of previous games (or replace Savage with them a few nights each week).

One more thing. I just listened to Larry's commentary today. Please stop calling him. He's absolutely frustrated. If you respect and truly love him please stop bothering him. He's had enough! God bless Larry. What he must be going though right now. My prayers are with you.
