Larry Wells out at DRC-FM

Larry Wells has been let go from DRC-FM as a result of Buckley budget cuts. Grahame Winters will be taking over middays, and is now listed on the Big D website for weekdays 9AM-2PM. Larry has been removed from the website.

He's been there for at least 30 years, right?
This is unfortunate. Not that he was the best ever on radio, but still...
They certainly run enough spots. If they're still not profitable, something is wrong.

With a name like ProgressiveTalk and your history of biased posts, you have very little credibility in your criticism of Grahame. Shame on you for hijacking the post anyways. Larry's a great guy, and this came from the top, it was not a programming move as it was explained to me.

(By the way, I'd feel pretty confident in saying Eric Fahnoe is calling the bigger programming calls at The Talk of Connecticut.)

Got a response from Winters on my previous post, which I commemted on her tenure as PD at WDRC, of which she sent me a personal email to rip me, after all the emails I've sent her to criticize her work, which went unanswered. It is not a stretch that as PD, the ratings of WDRC AM are near the bottom of the ratings tank, as trying to be WTIC light hasn't cut it for WDRC AM. As for the firing of Wells. it is a tactic that businesses are employing with regularity: cut the experienced staff and hire some wet-behind-the-ears 23 year old. Schools employ this tactic all the time. Less salary and no benefits, and in radio's case, more automation!!! What, do you people think that the business mantra of money talks and people's livelihoods are a commodity that can be trashed at any time has changed? If anything, it's been accelerated!!!

Calm down.

Sorry, but I get a little teed off when long-time employees anywhere, not just in radio get canned because of the "almighty dollar". People are not paper towels that one can just use and discard with not a second thought behind it.

So, how's the weather in Camelot?

For the record, I answer email.

A) Chilly AND B) Not mine. BTW, since I now have your attention, how long is WDRC AM going to air such no-talents like Malzberg and the racist Savage? Rushie light just doesn't cut it as the ratings show. Do the names, Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, Norman Goldman and Mike Malloy ring a bell or two??

I apologize to everyone for the fact that this guy's totally hijacked this link...but before I go...

WDRC is a conservative talk station and that predates any programming input I have had. Last I checked the people you mentioned don't fit that image.
BTW Mr. Radio, Malzberg was replaced by Rita Cosby over a month ago.

...That's why they make chocolate and vanilla. You don't like it, don't listen. We'll miss you. ;)

I'm dislike politics, so most of what's on The Talk of Connecticut isn't for me, however I enjoy Dr. Joy Browne plus some of the lifestyle shows on the weekend including The Travel Show and The Food Show. I do however miss The Talk of Connecticut's airing of The New Britain Rockcats games. The only thing I don't understand is why a station called The Talk of Connecticut airs 2 music shows - The Sounds of Sinatra and Big Band Jump, 2 hold-overs from the old Adult Standards format, which was replaced by a music format called "The Best of Everything" before 1360, etc went talk in 2002.

WOR in New York dropped Malzberg in favor of former Governor David Paterson.

And now, they're starting to eat into Savage's program with a partial simulcast of "NBC Nightly News." Are they doing the same on WDRC?

(OK, I'm seeing double here... Grahame, did you clone yourself? )

Randi Rhodes? Stephanie Miller? Ed Schultz? I remember their ratings in New Haven, which may be the most liberal city in Connecticut.

Looked like this: _ . _

Good times...

Just thinking out loud, and avoiding prior posts, but could the company simply be cutting expenses to make the station(s) more attractive to a potential buyer? Hartford keeps declining in market size, AM radio in general is on life support, and a stand-alone FMer has a difficult time selling against a cluster. With Rick Buckley gone is the sentimental attachment to 'DCR also gone? Have no inside info; just speculating. Which raises another question ... would a new owner keep the FM format?

As I notice this thread has drifted off and tuned off freq about Larry's return to the airwaves. No pun intended.

As the AM side.I wonder if just rebroadcast the FM like they did ages ago. This will save time and money.I dont remember the FCC rules with retransmission of combo stations.Anyway I'm glad to see Larry back on the air. He's very entertaining.

Is he back on the air somewhere?
As of a few seconds ago, according to my sources, he is no longer employed by Buckley Broadcasting.
