Las Vegas Needs A Muzak Station

Las Vegas hasen't had a relaxing music station since KXTZ 94.1 FM went off the air in 1994. KJUL has been the sole relaxing station.

There isn't much of a market for Muzak radio stations anymore. The term "Muzak" mainly refer to station that were jockless and played mostly elevator music. They were popular from about the late 50's to late 80's.

There's only about 48 Easy Listening stations still out there according to
radio-locator.com. Only about 20% of them play elevator music.

KHOY in Copus Christi, TX and WXTZ in South Florida still do and they can be streamed online.

Easy Listening stations usually played tapes. It was mostly sweeping instrumentals of old standards by such artists as Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow.

There was some vocal mixed in to the elevator music. If you wanted this kind of music in your personal collection, you'd probably either have to call the station where they would give you information to have this music specially ordered and delivered to your home.

Music by Percy Faith, Henry Mancini, Burt Bacharach, Frank Pourcel, Ray Conniff Singers and many more.

There's very little chance of any station anywhere switching to this format.

XM sattelite radio however, does offer a beautiful music channel called "Sunny" which is exactly as you described. You can hear it online with using their 3-day free trial.

Also, try WOEZ in Knoxville, TN at www.ez88.org. It's a great 21st century version of beautiful music incorporating not only the artists you mentioned, but also some smooth jazz, latin rhythms, and new age. Very creatively done.

Easy Listening died 15 years ago. The 12+ ratings were good (I remember 94.1 KXTZ hitting a 13 share in 1988), but towards the end the audience was all 55+ and difficult to sell to advertisers.

I enjoyed the format if I was in the mood for it. My favorite easy listening song was "1900 Yesterday" by Liz Damon's Orient Express.
