Last chance to catch Big Rick's last shift on KFOG tonight

Funny, I tuned in last nite around 9:50 (in advance of the 10@10 replay) and they were playing the long 15-minute live version of "Freebird" by Skynyrd. I thought it was some kind of mistake, and since it was followed by 7 minutes of commercials (twice as long as the typical KFOG stop-set) and then a bunch of new music -- the 10@10 replay never did air -- I chalked it all up to a computer glitch.

Little did I know Rick had chosen "Freebird" as his farewell. He Tweeted this earlier today:

"I'll be back somewhere fairly soon but can't say. What happened? In NASCAR they'd say nobodys fault, it was just one of those things"

Guess we'll be hearing him on The Band soon? ;)

maybe he'll surface on Entercom's new KUFX SF/SJ simulcast?

according to hints he's dropped it may be The Band. Which would be kinda amusing -- does that mean Cumulus is even worse to work for than Cheap Channel?

Big Rick is not your typical DJ - he's a big name in the market. So if he's had a parting of the ways with Cumulus - even 'Cheap Channel' is smart enough to know that Rick would be a plus in their ratings battle with KFOG. It has nothing much to do with which corporation is worse to work for.

Well, obviously, but it's still interesting that CC -- which has been running The Band rather, um, frugally so far -- would spring for a big name like Rick.

Entercom's Market Manager, Dwight Walker was Big Rick's GM at KFOG under Susquehanna. Entercom just purchased KUFX hmmmm.

Put a nail in the coffin of that era, next thing people will be talking "Lobster" or "Travis T Hip" or Dr. Hip... they need an old folks home for old FM radio relics

"Dr. Hip" (Dr. Eugene Schoenfeld) is still around, and still practicing medicine. No - radio doesn't need him anymore, but he doesn't need radio either.

Not only that, but unfortunately Travus T Hipp is still around, too. He is a commentator on KPIG. Since when did hippie translate into redneck?

You could think of KPIG as cross-over hippie/redneck. If you remember the pedigree from KFAT, that station had a lot of hippie listeners.

Chan Laughlin (Travus T. Hipp) was originally hired straight out of jail by Tom Donahue at KSAN about forty years ago. The wheel goes 'round...

I've always felt uncomfortable with radio stations that tried to appeal to both hippies and rednecks given that they're generally at opposite ends of the spectrum. It pained me to see KPIG bumper stickers on pickup trucks that had "Don't Tread On Me" and NRA stickers on them.
