Last Cowboy Game For The Ticket?

Well after that sorry performance by the Cowboys  the 2008 season is over and thier is talk out there that Jerry Jones and the Boys may opt out of thier contract with Cumulus and go out for bid? So has the Ticket broadcasted thier last Cowboy game or will they make attempts to keep em. I would think they would have to make some changes like moving them from The Bone to the Wolf on the FM side........I just have a feeling that they will end up on The Fan.

Hrm.

PROS: A big hot stick on the FM dial, beatnik neutral dudes who can do an interview without the fear of Gordo sticking his craw in the middle of it, a new station willing to sell its collective mother to make a dent in the ratings, AND that said, they will do it on the cheap for Jerry to show a profit in 2009.

CONS: No visibility, credibility or awareness (although all of it is building, slowly), you get what you pay for... at least that is the case most of the time, notwithstanding the $85 MILLION Jerry dished out on retreads, has-beens and a couple of never will bes.

Thoughts?

KRLD AM/FM will get the rights to the cowpokes, as name recognition of the calls alone will sell them, as well as being a previous longtime radio home. I can also see the FM side simulcasting Rangers games once the season starts as well.

That's only if somebody opts out, and CBS does a barter deal. Most of my research shows that CBS does straight rights deals and not barter deals. I have said it before and will say it again, it just depends on what Jerry Jones wants....straight rights deal or the current barter deal.

It would be better for the Cowboys to control the radio rights, so they can sell that in a package with signage, pre-season tv, and other co-marketing deals.

Broadcast quality can always be solved by making KPLX the FM flagship.

I can't see the benefit of disrupting your programming on two stations 160 times a season to put baseball on both signals. Baseball has so many early starts that kill afternoon drive with pregame shows.

Makes sense to package the Cowboys on both signals because they only play 16 games almost all of which are on the weekend. Then the Cowboys will also want you to run their weeknight player/coach shows on one or both stations so they can clear more spots.

I wouldn't be suprised to see the Ticket let the Cowboys go wherever they wanted. Yes, even to 105.3.

After all, the Ticket was doing just fine in ratings and revenue without the cowboys, and they're still doing fine revenue wise, and ticket is flat or down in the PPM world, so I don't think having the Cowboys is helping them there.

Cut free from Jerryworld, KTCK can go back to doing their own pre and post game shows, and they won't have to carry those unlistenable weeknight shows.

But like Salemjedi said, it's all going to come down to what Jerry wants. If what I hear is true, that jerry wants ALL the spot inventory to sell himself, it's just going to come down to whether CBS or Cumulus is willing to give it to him.

ANd let's say CBS gives Jerry free reign on 105.3. All the spots, coach and player shows every night, the whole 9 yards. Great right? But what if 105.3 is absolutely sucking in the ratings come September '09? At least with the Ticket, Jerry has an outlet on the #1 sports station in the market. Can you picture what it would be like if 105.3 is sitting there with a .5 come football season? Cumulus would be laughing all the way to the bank...

Cowboys are not sold on ratings... They are sold on the name... Period. They bring there own built in listeners, and ratings. Ad buyers just want to say they are part of the Cowboys Broadcast. The Numbers matter little.

The Cowboys are not going anywhere. They will finish out the contract they have with Cumulus and remain on The Ticket. By the time the 2009 football season begins, 105.3 will have flipped formats once again.

I wouldn't be so sure. Any move that would put him on a full class C would be a smart move and increase the audience. The PT Barnum side of Jerry also knows that the Fan would probably start promoting (on air and billboards) the heck out of being the new flagship which would help him to increase the buzz as he attempts to sell more tickets to his new stadium.

The 93.3 has a terrible signal and is hard to hear to the East (Garland/Rockwall/Mesquite) because they have to protect Greenville's 93.5. The west side of Fort Worth and beyond is pretty marginal as well. Pretty sad that you can't get the cowboy game in some of these suburbs.

At least their not as bad as the Mavericks flagship. You can't receive 103.3 in the arena because their transmitter site is closer to Oklahoma than Plano.

Again, moving off KTCK/KDBN because of the FM signal coverage is a non-issue as Cumulus can move the FM simulcast from KDBN to KPLX. If the Cowboys are wanting to opt out of the deal with Cumulus, it is not over that.

Which is why if Cumulus wants to keep them I would think they would need to move them from 93.3 to 99.5. I understand what Bennett and Catlin was trying to do, attempting to use the Cowboys to make chicken salad from chicken *&^$, but it just didn't work. I just can't believe that Jones and his people allowed them to put the Cowboys on two small sticks when they have a strong stick to use. But I guess after Jerry's recent decisions for his team, I should't be surprised ::)

You seem to think that Cumulus is willing to move the broadcast to KPLX. Unlike KTCK (outside of Cowboys games) KPLX has decent weekend numbers. They make a lot of money running spots on KPLX every Sunday. So to keep the Cowboys they have to give them 5 to 7 hours of air time which Jerry keeps to himself. So big additional expense no additional payoff.
