Last Man Standing to Feature Ham Radio in Upcoming Episode

Oh yeah, they say that *now*, but just give them a few more days.....

They're just all over this show, aren't they, the ARRL?

I'm starting to wonder if Disney haven't sucked them into an advertising contract or something. I guess it's just another reason not to take very much the ARRL say anymore too seriously.

Edit add:
Check this out! No wonder they're shilling for the programme so much--look at all their product placement on the wall! http://arrl.org/images/view/News/Mandy_gear.jpg

Wonder how much they're getting paid by Disney for that?

Good example. A bootleg operator speaking to licensed hams. Whatever works for TV I guess.

Last Man Standing episode showing Ham Radio in use.

What a great and funny episode of Last Man Standing that showed some Ham Radio activity. The show producers gave us a "heads up" a few months ago that they would be taking artistic license and it wouldn't be strictly by-the-book. Why? because the show is a comedy aimed at millions of people most have never heard of Ham Radio. It was not a show aimed at the 750,000 licensed Hams. It was not designed to illustrate strict adherence to the FCC rules. It was great PR for Ham Radio and got the name and basic idea out in the public eye. The ARRL stuff is great and makes the shack look like a shack. The shack at the Outdoor Man store is there as a prop but actually works. The QSL cards on the wall and all make it seem like a real shack. I think this episode was the first time we've seen the Home shack.

The ARRL represents HAMS and posting the standard certificates from them and CQ and others is just normal.
Why would the ARRL be all over this? Why wouldn't they be? It is huge and powerful Public Relations that they could not afford to buy. When was the last time you saw a Public Service announcement for Ham Radio? This was a show that reached several MILLION viewers. Why even the FCC helped out suggesting a call sign that would not otherwise be used (KA0xTT).

In my opinion, it's all good. More people need to hear about Ham Radio overall, not how we ID or frequency and power limits and etc.

"Mandy" (Molly Ephraim) is a treasure and made the point that ham radio is just like texting but without the typing. That may sink into a few young heads and get some interested in amateur radio perhaps. Perhaps not, but it was funny.

Kind of a Catch-22 situation with the script, wasn't it? Tim Allen's character couldn't be there to oversee her, his character as the licensee, because that would have been going against the mother's intent of taking away the cell phone. But by him not being there, it technically violated the rules. Kind of reminded me of when hams would have the XYL play the piano on the air, technically against the rules. I think SSB took the fun out of that, because it never would sound just right with a drifting or uncentered BFO.

Also reminded me of "The Big Bang Theory" episode where "Bawwy Kwipke" made Sheldon breathe enough Helium to sound like he was on SSB with a drifting BFO. Plus the fact that breathing Helium would be fatal in that concentration in an open room. Also, Physics departments would normally require teaching classes, and those would require a lot more F=ma than talking about Higgs Bosons.
