Last night in east tennessee receiving 2 birmingham stations that must have been on daytime power/pattern.
1070 WAPI was dominating the channel, covering up usually strong WFNI. Also heard 690 WSPZ with fox sports. both stations unusually loud and clear.

Hmmmm, so it was WJOX that I was getting on 690 last night (through WSCR hash). Interesting.

Last night was an odd night around here; was picking up some mid-range MW signals that don't usually float to the top. One example was 640 WKY Oklahoma City; another was WGVS Muskegon, MI duking it out with the normally (very) dominant KOA on 850. WGVS nulls toward us and only runs 1 kw. Also pulled in a pretty strong signal from WBEN Buffalo, who's 5 kw are nulled in our direction (Chicago 'burbs). I was also pulling in an R&B station on 730, but it was mired in WGN slop so I couldn't ID it. First time I've heard that one. As I said, it was an evening where many non-typical stations were logged.

From a longer distance, I did pick up good reception of CFAC Calgary and CBW Winnipeg - but the propagation was poor toward the western US.

Hearing WJOX and WAPI tonight, between 10:00 p.m. and still going strong as I write this at 10:40 p.m.

Same from southern Lake Co., IL last night. WJOX was amazingly strong. Fascinating, as I hadn't heard it here before.

Re: tonight is also birmingham's night

For any DXer that would like Alabama in their AM logbook - as of 9:25 p.m. I am receiving WJOX 690 and WAPI 1070 well tonite hear in No. IL. Neal Boortz on 1070, Fox Sports Radio on 690. So this is 3 nights in a row... shhh...please don't tell the stations....

Yep, I heard 'em too!

Odd thing about 1070 - i've confirmed signals from Madison, WI; Sarnia, ON; LA (KNX); and now Alabama. I have yet to confirm hearing Indianapolis! That may sound odd, and it's probably there (if I concentrate), but the same conditions that favor close-in skywave seem to bring Madison in over Indy. Just an odd quirk.

BRNout: Have you ever logged KNTH/Houston at 1070? I had them in the car up as far as Texarkana one time, and I believe gar fla has logged KNTH across the pond in Florida. Runs 10kW in the daytime and a healthy 5kW at night. With the right conditions, I suspect the signal could very well head on up into Ks., Mo., and Ill. KNTH is a Salem outlet offering mostly Conservative Talk. You'd know it if you heard it. You'll hear the call letters spoken several times throughout a break.

I'm 50 miles north of Birmingham. I tuned in last night expecting them to be blasting in, since they are apparently on daytime power, I could hear them well, but nothing like the "big ones" like WWL, WLW, etc.

From Chicago: not as of yet. There's a lot of competition on 1070, but different nights seem to favor propagation from different areas.

However, I did log KNTH from San Jose, Costa Rica about a month ago. They were covering a Houston Aeros hockey game and they came in quite well - for one night only. That's actually farther from Houston than Chicago is....

Betcha it was Soul 73, KKDA Grand Prarie, TX. The shoot north at night and have been heard that way.
