As always, last evening's Georgia Radio Hall of Fame dinner was outstanding. John Long again put together a super event. It wasn't without some scary moments when a presenter took ill, but otherwise it was flawless, and everyone seemed to be having a great time.
WSB's Kirk Melhuish, one of the inductees, was hilarious. From listening to him on the air, I had formed the impression that he had no sense of humor, but he sure does. He started by saying he thought the event was good but wouldn't know for sure until the consultant got back to him with what the focus group said. He said he was thinking about the amount of "radio ego" in the room. He said the amount of radio ego in the room was second only to Neal Boortz having dinner by himself. And he joked about WXIA-TV's Wiz-O-Meter, saying it sounded like some kind of a urine test.
Tom Hughes was second in hilarity among the inductees. He talked about how the WGST newsroom has gone from 35 employees to 4. He said Clear Channel calls that "the home stretch."
Other people inducted include legendary top-40 (and WQXI) personality Sam Hale, former Jefferson-Pilot Radio president Clarke Brown, the one-and-only JJ Jackson (WQXI and Fox 97 plus other legendary stations), former Fox 97 GM Eddie Esserman and country star Bill Anderson (whom I apparently got PO'ed by mistaking him for Clarke Brown).
It was my annual "kid in a candy store" event.
