Even before the big storm hit yesterday (thurs), there were some strange things happening though they could have been the result of the storms from the previous night (wed).
All day I heard random roaring noises on WTIC-AM and at various times the audio would cut out for nearly a minute, then around mid-afternoon, the static level became almost intolerable, but I assumed it was the storm causing the noise at that point as it was constant and was still there when the audio dropped off again (I can clearly recall audio dropping around 10:30 am and at 5:30pm as well)
[Side note, I had a close call as well just after 5pm, I went to work to check upcoming work schedules and just as soon as the elevator doors shut as I was heading out, lightning either hit the building or just took out the power and the elevator was down. The backup generator kicked in or power returned right away, but the computer that runs the elevator takes a good minute to reset, but doesn't it always seem like forever and the fear that it might not reset correctly is always present, I've actually been in that thing when the building was struck before, this was very similar]
When I got home I decided to see what was happening around the dial, this was around 6pm and it's not news to anyone that evern before this storm WDRC-FM was not only without audio for some time but had no HD either and WWYZ has either dropped HD or is having issues with it. I didn't notice any mention of WESU being off the air, when power goes off in the Wesleyan area, even if it comes right back, it can cause havoc for WESU and so they might be right back on or it might take a while sometimes. I don't know if this is related but I also noticed WMRQ is HD but no more HD-2 and I see mention that the HD-3 is long gone.
I think when tonight's storm hits, I'll watch to see what happens with the local FM's (not sure how well AM will do here as I really can't get much when I'm not in the car.
