Last Road Trip of the Year

As most regulars on the DX board know, I do a lot of business travel. My final trip of the year takes me to a part of the planet where I've not spent a lot of time. I'm leaving Monday (28th) for six nights in Columbia, SC by way of Knoxville, TN. Any suggestions? "Heads-ups"? Requests?

As always, I'll report anything of note that I come across.

My only request is that you let us know what you hear down there. I'm always interested in your reports.

Thanks!

I've gotten some crazy daytime skywave in S.C. this time of year. You are also in a locale where the 1130's meet, Shreveport vs NYC and the 1080's Hart. and Dallas. I've gotten 620 Milw and 620 St. Pete just a few minutes apart despite there being much closer 620's. And you are probably in X band heaven. Curious to see how badly WBZ's blaster affects Des Moines on 1040. With my last car radio I got both just fine.
Sure there are a lot others, KSL and KOA may be bonuses. Have a safe trip...

Thanks, guys....

I'm still in Tennessee...Just outside of Pigeon Forge (Knoxville area) tonight. Haven't turned on the radio here in my hotel room yet. But to your point, vibe, this afternoon around 2pm in EST in the rental car WTAM and KMOX were both in with good signals. Curiously, no obvious skywave lower or higher. I'd qualify that as "crazy skywave".

Here's one I'd be interested in knowing if you can get at night in Columbia - 610 WIP.

While their signal is in a mostly NW/SE direction, it doesn't seem to be a real null to the SW, as they have 2 towers.

I'd imagine you'd hear WFNZ and possibly WIOD as dominant stations but I'm wondering if WIP could be heard in the background if the radio is facing the right direction.

Gar....

I'm now in Columbia. I'll definitely make it a point to try for WIP. There's a local 620 here, but I think I can null it. I'm in a high rise hotel (Columbia Marriott), but an upper floor. So while conditions are not ideal, they're also not horrible.

This morning before dawn, driving through the Smokies, conditions were pretty good. Per some of the suggestions, I had another local 620 in the Knoxville area, so no DX there. 1080 was a jumble, but 1130 was all KWKH...on top, alone, and with a good signal. wWHO had a fabulous signal alone on 1040. 1160, however was a complete mess. Chicago blowtorches were all good....especially WSCR and WLS (no trace of the Cubans). The New Yorkers were all good...especially WFAN. Exceptions were WOR which was weak and WINS and WBBR which were completely missing. No major surprises on the other channels, although I was mildly surprised to hear CFMZ alone and quite strong. CJBC (broadcasting from the same stick) was also there, but much weaker.

Finally, yesterday I reported KMOX on daytime skywave. Not so sure about that now. There's a local 1120 near Gatlinburg. I was about 50 miles north of Knoxville when I thought I was hearing KMOX. The local is oldies. KMOX is talk...which is what I heard. But since I'm going to be back in the same area on Monday....this is subject to "further review".

I also reported WTAM early Monday afternoon. I'm still comfortable with that.

Yeah, you got 620 in Columbia, WGCV. It's only 2500 watts daytime, but because it has a wide-open frequency it can be heard in most of SC daytime, like WVOC. Nighttime is weaker, but the transmitter is only a few miles away. Other than that at night, you've got 560 WVOC, 1320, 1470 and a bunch of graveyarders and daytimers.

Try for KOA at night. I've heard it in Charleston a couple times, but only weakly over about 3 or 4 others. Wonder if it'll be any different in Columbia.

Daytime reception is usually pretty good with a good radio. WBT is very listenable year-round. WPTF could be heard daytime. I've heard KMOX as late as 8:30 or 9am in Charleston.

Just this weekend, as I posted in an earlier post, I got WCBS at about 12:40pm in Charleston over the noise. WWVA and WHAM usually are in late afternoons, even though they cannot be heard well nights.

Update from last night in the hotel room and in the car earlier this evening (about an hour after sunset). A few frequencies I tried ....

530: Good signal from Cuba with (presumably) CIAO underneath
610: No WIP....or much of anything else. I nulled the local 620 so there wasn't much of an issue with splatter, but 610 was surprisingly blank.
740: I was trying for CFMZ. I wound up with KRMG
1030: WBZ last night, weak. Earlier this evening it was religion. (KCTA?)
1040: WHO with a pretty good signal
1080: "KRLD vs WTIC Challenge" This evening it was ESPN out of Orlando
1130: KWKH wins the battle here. Not exactly strong, but definitely alone.

Chicago blowtorches...including WMVP...all present and on top of their respective channels. WSCR and WLS strongest. Cuba a non-factor. WGN weakest.

I'll try for KOA tonight as suggested, and report on how that goes along with anything else of note.

Your 530 *could be* CIAO, but I just started a post re AM 530.... :) Strange goings-on.

Thanks--I was wondering about WMVP.

Thanks for checking out 610.

I'm quite surprised there was nothing there.

I guess the conditions were not favorable at the time.

Update from last night in Columbia, SC (Wed. 11/30)

530: Strongest Cuban...with CIAO occasionally underneath. The "usual suspects" on 640, 670, 710, and 890 were either weak or missing altogether. Rather surprising.

570: I suspected I'd find R. Reloj on top somewhere and here it was. (Under local 560)
610: Kept trying but literally came up empty
640: WGST usually on top. A little surprising
740: CFMZ back in the mix...usually on top
790: R. Reloj also present here in the slop.
850: Basically a mess. What I thought might be KOA turned out to be WFTL
1000: Good signal again from WMVP, but XEOY also strong
1030: WBZ stronger than previous night...and alone
1040: This was a little weird. WHO and Cuba taking turns being on top....usually each for a couple of minutes at a time. Audio on the Cuban was beyond awful.
1060: XEEP kickin' butt.
1070: Thought I'd take a stab at KNX. Wound up with ESPN Indianapolis
1080: Orlando disappeared later in the evening. I thought I had WTIC, but not sure.
1110: WBT...presumably groundwave....weak but alone
1160: Slop. If KSL was in here, it certainly wasn't identifiable
1500: WFED had a great signal (In the neighborhood....WLAC and WCKY also good)

Depending on the conditions and time of day, 1070 WFNI appears to have a surprisingly good signal throughout the East & Southeast. This past week while traveling through PA/NJ/NY, WFNI was listenable at sunset but subject to fading. Down in VA/NC earlier this week, it was there at night, never strong, but again listenable with fading.

I don't remember where or exact times, but I was surprised they do so well.

It was also good Monday night in the Knoxville area, and I hear it regularly when I'm on the Gulf Coast in the Pensacola area.

NENC WFNI dominant night here on 1070. Lose WNCT late afternoon. Also WKOK Sudbury PA heard on 1070.
