LAT-TV launches May 19

LAT-TV, a new Spanish language network launches May 19 on stations in DFW, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Phoenix. Press release: http://www.lattv-english.com/en/rel/?13Haven't seen any signal yet on Channel 30 here in Houston, although it's possible I haven't checked when they've been testing. The station here has a new transmitter facility in the Missouri City tower farm. Channel 30 had previously been home to a rather hard to receive LP station that had run various shopping formats for a number of years.Anyone seeing anything in DFW or SA? I know the Austin station has been all infomercials up to this point.

From what I can tell, LAT is going to be a LP here in Dallas, as well as pulling alot of packaged 3rd rate programming. Id rather have Si TV to be honest.

According to the news release, KJJM-LP Channel 34 will carry the network in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area. Something called KISA-40 will carry it in San Antonio. Personally, I think there are too many spanish language channels on the air already.

I dont mind new latin stations, as long as they dont rehash the same telenovelas or variety shows the other ones threw out 20 years ago. Hence, why I like Si TV, which is available on alot of cable systems(why not comcast in dallas??) and sat(ending shameless plug).

It's low power, not on the sats nor cable systems. They are entering a crowded universe in very weak LP signals in all their markets. Chances of survival: 10%. They will be off the air by this time next year.

Ch 30 was owned by the same couple that owned chs 25 and 42 in Phoenix. All 3 stations were bought in a package deal by Latin America Broadcasting Inc.As of last night, ch 25 is still running HSN and ch 42 still has Shop at Home. Ch 42, now called KVPA-LP, will run Lat TV and has been granted permission to move from a fringe location to the South Mtn antenna farm, from where they should hit all of the main Hispanic neighborhoods. Phoenix now has 9 Spanish-language stations, out of a total 27 full-service and low-power stations serving the metro area.

Two of the Lat TV owners Pat & Wes Burd are good people with good broadcast backgrounds trying to emulate a formula they used in Eastern Europe with success. The problem here is that everyone, even the Hispanic population expects higher levels of technology. LP TV signals are non-existent on the DMA fringes and spotty just about everywhere else. A great example is the Tube, channel 55. They signed on as an LP and garnered the Rockets contract about 6 or 7 years ago. The Rockets cancelled that contract barely a month in because Channel 55's signal could be barely picked up south of FM 1960. Since, I believe 55 is full power and they are up on the satellites and cable systems. They still don't pull viewers, but at least they have the technology to do so. Lat TV will find similar problems in Houston. There's too much competition among the other 6 or 7 Spanish language stations that compete in full power with most on the cable systems and sat dishes. Hispanic Mom & Pop businesses, which built Univision 45 many years ago, are currently spread thin between Telemundo, TV Azteca, Liberman, Telefutura and a couple other stations I can't think of. Unless Lat TV is selling for about $10-$20 per spot, they are going to face some severe challenges in short time, but even at these low ad rates, they still won't be able to pay the piper so-to-speak. In any case Wes, Pat and everyone else at Lat TV deserves Buena Suerte.

Channel 55 has always been full power since it signed on in July, 1998. The tower location in Splendora makes it rather hard to receive in the southern parts of the market. I'm in Cy-Fair and the 55 signal is decent, but noticeably inferior to the Missouri City sticks. The KTBU digital signal is from Missouri City, IIRC.There a five full power Spanish language stations: 45, 47, 57, 61, 67. The others--21, 30, 34, and 43 are LP's, although LP's these days get to run more power than they used to.

I assumed that 55 was originally LP because of the signal. I live inside loop 610 near 59 and the West Loop then and now and got absolutely no signal when they signed on. After a while (over a year) I was able to pick up barely a ghostly figure through the snow holding the antenna in a funny position. Now they are on Direct TV and that's what I receive so I can get a strong signal. It's tough sledding without a decent signal no matter what.

Interestingly, when i read about this new t.v. station i thought it hadsomething to do with the bilingual hispanic t.v. network in los angeleswhich has a similiar name: LATV. You can check them out here:http://www.latv.com

I'm still wondering if LAT-TV is going to make it on the air tomorrow here in Houston. I haven't seen any test signal on channel 30 from their new transmitter facility. ??? Maybe it just hasn't been on when I've checked.

There have been a couple of stations here that have pretty much gone on with a cold start--55 and 61 are two that did little if any pre-launch transmitter testing. On the other hand, I remember 48 (now 47), 51, and 67 doing at least two weeks of continuous test patterns and ID pics before programming was officially launched. :-\

KISA launches today on Channel 40 in San Antonio

From: The San Antonio Express NewsNew Spanish channel San Antonio's broadcast TV choices just expanded with the launch today of LAT-TV, a Spanish-language channel geared to the entire family. It is debuting initially in the strong Hispanic markets of Austin, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix and San Antonio. Here it's under the call letters KISA and can be seen on Channel 40. To access the channel, you'll need an antenna; it's not on cable or satellite. Programming will include a large variety of entertainment and lifestyle shows, including sports, feature films, comedies, soap operas and cooking and fitness programs.

Hello everyone,I believe LAT TV will bring a different flavor to spanish tv market. I've had a chance to view some of their programming and it showcases latin america. Personally I think spanish television can a bit centralized. LAT TV brings shows not only from all over latin america but also from Europe. I think it's great as latino to be able watch shows that were produced in our home countries. For example there's a variety of shows from Peru, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, U.S. including the BBC. So, I hope you enjoy the wonderful diversity LAT TV has to offer.

Well, I certainly have to agree with the previous comments that LAT TV could bring the diverse programming that is often needed. Personally I think that new media is great, especially one that offers the variety (programming from many Latin American Countries) that this station is offering. Not to mention its stated commitment to the community. We should all support any new endeavors that would offer our communities so much.Cheers,

LAT-TV a no show in Houston...?

No signal on Channel 30 during numerous checks today. Anyone seeing anything on 34 in DFW, 17 in Austin. or 40 in SA? ??? ??? ???Unless it is a prime time launch, but I would think they would at least have a slate or test pattern up...

It's my understanding they are having technical problems. I commend them for trying to launch in 5 different markets at once. lets keep supporting them. :-*

I've got boxing en espanol right now on ch.34 from Dallas.... can barely receive the channel from my location in SE Garland.

LAT-TV's online schedule http://www.lattv.com/en/cms/?466 shows Friday night boxing at the time indicated, so it appears some of the network is on the air, minus at least Houston and Phoenix. Haven't heard about channel 17 in Austin yet, but that facility has been on the air for a while with infomercials, so I would think they made it on the air today. Anyone checked channel 40 in SA?
