Late 2023 Christmas Music and Format Watch

I noticed today that the K Love Christian radio broadcaster is playing all Christmas songs. K Love is heard locally in Cleveland on 103.7 FM. Not sure if this only for the weekend or a permanent change for the holiday season.

The last few years KLove has done "Christmas Music Weekends" leading up to Christmas. During the week they will sprinkle in Christmas with their regular CCM mix.

Probably the Fish cause they have the most variety of songs out there cause they are a Christian station that won't be afraid to play the religious songs for this time of year. You won't hear the same 20 songs repeated like on WMJI and WDOK. Wasn't it WDOK that banned Baby its cold outside cause they thought it was offensive? Not sure if that ban is still in effect but it was pretty stupid IMO. Never once did I hear that song and think the guy was trying to force himself on the girl.

That was a reaction to a moment in time when "Me Too" Mania was running wild.

That has since cooled down and I'm not aware of any active bans for that song.

WEOL (AM930, 100.3 FM) is doing something fun in relation to Christmas music. During their morning show, with Craig Adams and Bruce Van Dyke, they have been pulling an LP from their vinyl library. Then, throughout the show, they've been playing snippets from different songs on the album. Craig is spinning the actual vinyl. The focus is on the artist. So, they featured a 'Wayne Newton Christmas' by playing snippets from a 1976 Wayne Newton Christmas album. On Thursday, 11/30/2023, it's a 'Marty Robbins Christmas', featuring snippets from a 1967 Christmas album. What's particularly fun for me, as a record collector, is that they talk a little bit about what's on the album, what the jacket looks like, and in the case of the Wayne Newton album that it was on Chelsea Records (which, in the early 1970s, has my all-time favorite record label design and color scheme).

With Mary Robbins, Bruce asked if there's an "El Paso" Christmas song (based on Marty's mega-hit "El Paso" from 1959). There wasn't, but Bruce went on to find an "El Paso" Christmas song done by "Dash Riprock" who was a character on some episodes of "The Beverly Hillbillies" in the 1960s.

Correction. There is a long-lasting "Cow Punk" band known as Dash Rip Rock that was formed in 1984. They put out a new album in 2023.

It was a publicity stunt that went on for too long but gave WDOK a few extra ratings points that year. That's all that mattered.

Whatever it was it was dumb. WMJI then countered that stupidity if I remember and said we will play that song LOL. I think the Fish said it would as well.

So Ideastream has launched an all-Christmas jazz steam on their website and mobile app, programmed by WCLV overnight host/longtime WCPN 90.3 host Dan Polletta:

As I've been listening, sweepers with both Polletta and Dee Perry (another longtime WCPN host) are hinting at a new all-jazz stream coming online by February. Presumably this would also be as a HD subchannel on WCLV and/or the WKSU stations?

I just noticed 90.3 has fired up HD3. Currently, it is airing the same programming as HD2, which is a simulcast of WKSU. I assume it will eventually be something else, most likely jazz. I wonder if that means WCLV will drop the overnight jazz programming?
