This morning (10/31) on NJ 101.5's "News Jersey" they aired a sports report with the lead story that the Chicago White Sox had won the world series! Surely it was an old file that was never updated. After less than a minute the board op just potted it down and went to the next element....no explanation..no apology. I personally think they could have handled it better. your thoughts?

A mistake was made. You can't change the fact that a mistake was made. Why call attention too it?

I was taught back in the days of WKQV...if you goof it up...keep going...chances are most people did not catch it...some will...some won't...so what?
______________

I will tell you..

After it started to play I would say something like...

That is obviously not a current sportscast and we apologize. We will update you with the latest sports next hour. New Jersey 101.5 News time is...

Instead of ignoring the mistake you acknowledge it and promise to make it up and then move on. This is a credibility issue...A respected news organization should (IMHO) take responsibility for any misinformation (or, in this case very OLD information) just as quickly as they would take credit for a job well done.

My guess is that this was being handled by a board op who panicked and quickly went to the next element.

Jersey 101.5 News time is...

Which, of course, draws an enourmous amount of attention to these facts:

1. The person on duty wasn't prepared
2. Even after acknowledging their mistake, they weren't able to give the correct information....it would take them (in Bandscanners case, an entire hour to recover)
3. And, would be an open invitation to the listener interested in getting the latest sports to immediately tune elsewhere.

Bandscanner, acknowleging you have dropped the ball, but will fix it an hour later may not be the best way of dealing with this.

In the old days, we were ALWAYS taught not to draw attention to our mistakes.

Good luck.

Speaking of "late" and old, I don't think their newscasts have been called "News Jersey" since the late 90's???

It's been "New Jersey 101.5 Radio News" for as long as I can remember now.
______________

If you're an early riser you will note that they refer to the 5-6 am weekday newsblock as "News Jersey"

Actually it's called "New Jersey's First News".
