Later Gabe....

sean or richie? mark or meredith? will one of them go or maybe even brian or chrissy will one of them go next who knows this is an unpredictable market

stations are trying to eliminate extra weight but taking risks as well

bob miller is on WBPM with Brian Jones maybe they will only keep those worthy of being heard on radio?

Wow, sad news indeed. Gabriel has had a more-or-less non-stop 40-year run in this town. Not too shabby if you ask me.

Then again... after 40 years of working, my ass will be retiring! lol - assuming of course social security still exists in 2026 :D

Good luck to J.G. in whatever the future brings!

I applied for WPTR 2 months ago when the job first opened. I interviewed with the GM and Mr. Crawford. 20 hours a week for the 3-7 pm shift, voice tracked. $13 per hour. They apparently decided against it.

I interviewed for this one, too. 20 hours, PT, $13/hour, some promo work... Made it to the "final three" and even had a third interview. Not sure who (if anyone) ended up getting hired. Station seems doomed.

This makes me happy that none of the 4 interviews I had with WGY panned out... No one is safe.

Gy news team is pretty safe... They provide news to most of the east coast!

Wow a third interview, this tells me they were looking for a female. I wish they could've been honest and told us (Male DJs)

Stunning: $13 an hour. At 20 hours, that's a whopping $260 a week. So let's say a station is getting (a lowball figure of) $20 a unit... middays... the jock is "paid for" after the first spot airs. Everything else is gravy. Okay, let's be more conservative and take into account sales commissions for the person who sold the spot, health insurance for the full time staff members who are lucky to get that benefit, power, heat, Arbitron, BMI/ASCAP/SESAC fees, FICA and G&A. After the third commercial in the hour, based on $13/hour, everything is gravy. "But hey, you'll be on the radio." More college students, especially Communications majors should read these boards for a dose of reality they may not understand or get in the classroom.

Ok, people are thinking this, I'll ask. What are the salaries in this area?

I'll guess. If I'm wrong tell me.

Morning show - On a top 5 station, Host $70K-$90K +, co-host $50K.

Middays - $35K

Nights - 6 pm and later $25K.

If you are voice tracking a show, I know someone who is getting $10 per hour. That's what I was told.

Thoughts?

Also, About the New School. Someone else told me they graduate everyone that walks in, regardless of their skill level.

I got interviewed but never got to the final three crawford said wow nice expierence I have 10 yrs on-air expierence and I also told him the lowest i would take would be 9.00 hr but he offered 13 hr.

Honestly they should have told us they were looking for females, they had a women for the local albany area for a while before she left, I think her name was shirella, crawford probably decided not to go through with hiring anyone at the last minute I guess.

yeah reporter i graduated from the new school and they train you pretty good , get your hopes up that you will land somewhere in some market lol

it's about luck who you know in radio and your overall expierence in radio , coming right out of the new school don't expect a job right away it might take a year if your lucky or longer. I mean you intern but doesn't mean your gonna get a spot in radio.

I was lucky i landed somewhere but my classmates weren't so lucky

I can say.. doing nights, I never earned more than $11/hour, PT, no benefits.. That was just a few months ago. I have a Masters in Communications...

NSRT will take anyone. Trust me, I know this. They take anyone who has money (or financial aid) and teach them to be "radio superstars". Most of them don't have any talent, or work ethic... They go through, get a certificate, and get sent on their way. The "job placement" offered is simply a job in the industry-- most are placed as remote crew, because there are simply no jobs (and again, with the work ethic...). Hell, they've taken students with cleft pallets and traumatic brain injuries.

wow radiogrrrl518 you have a masters in communications and only making below 11hr that's crazy, yeah you are so right on the New School of Radio you hit the nail on the chalk board.

getting in is key though once your in no matter what position even if your at the bottom of the tadpole , if you don't screw up your gonna be fine and move up but you won't be making alot, radio you need to love what it's about customer servicing a big audience, stations are trying to make money and alot of there consumers are females 18-45. They need to give low wages to make it big

one of my friends graduated NSRT did his intership got hired as a remote crew and is now overnights on-air that's where they put you to try your skills out and if they like you they will move you to days on-air.

its about climbing the ladder if your good you will go far in radio but you won't make alot believe me

This is Danny Gates that you speak of, I'm assuming!

I've been on-air for over 7 years. Unfortunately, I was also caught in layoffs at my most recent station. Now, just trying to get back in, but it seems impossible...

RadioGrrrl518 you wouldn't happen to be Darcy Miller on Crush taking a guess lol

Haha, no, I'm not... But she is a friend of mine!

who are you if your willing to tell us that or where did you work what station?

I've worked at quite a few stations in the area. I have yet to work for ABC or CC, though. I've been prowling this board for a few years, looking for tips on openings. I'm still in radio, although in a much lesser capacity that I have been in the past... A whopping 4 hours a week (which I LOVE, don't get me wrong), but I would love to get back to where I want to be.

I've worked several other jobs, in various capacities... But nothing has been as satisfying as radio. It's my only love... Besides my husband (the reason why I unable to move).

I'd rather remain anonymous on this board, if that's all right. If I need to, I'll tell someone who I am. :)

oh ok something tells me your meredith from Crush because you mentioned about your husband.

it's ok to remain anonymous

I too have a passion for radio which exceeds $$$ they give me , most people are in it to win for money sorry not gonna work

I am not trying to be famous or a superstar , your nothing in radio but a pawn that's what the market managers think. there out to make money off your talent but I don't mind it.

college stations are laid back however you don't get paid but again I would do radio totally volunteer like i had been doing for 10 yrs

No. You are incorrect, my friend. There are more female radio DJs (and married ones, at that) than just those at TSM. I am not an employee there.
