That's a great piece of trivia!

Emmis enjoyed great success with KSHE yet never seemed able to get the formula right when it owned WLUP. The Loop was an underwhelming listen every time I tuned in under Emmis' ownership. Interestingly enough, KSHE's ratings seemed to grow even stronger once Hubbard acquired the station from Emmis.

Considering the top Chicago rock station for years has been the Hubbard-owned WDRV, I would say that Hubbard probably has some superb knowledge of how to program the classic rock format. It's interesting, since Hubbard specializes in talk and sports radio and they don't have the largest amount of music stations (they only own two Alternative-formatted stations in the entire country for example).
 
The problem with many of the analyses on stations here is that they are all being done with an eye only to a station’s performance by itself. Today’s view is a broader take on a cluster strategy, and it can be useful to have a weak station.

Believe it or not, a cluster with a big cash cow can often tolerate an underperformer on its roster and hold that station in reserve, letting it be known they’d flip it in a moment if necessary to deter another operator from attacking the cash cow - or else the underperformer goes after THEIR cash cow
