Nothing much of interest except WARQ. I was surprised to see them jump up 1 share. This begs the question about how relevant rock radio is in Columbia. From past posts, I've noticed a lot of people saying how weak the market is in rock. I agreed at the time with all the urbans being on top. WXBT has been beating WHXT for quite a bit, while WHXT's numbers remain stagnant and declining somewhat. WLXC has fallen lately as well to WWDM. Are Urban radio formats starting to show overkill in this market? I think so. Has been for a while. Columbia doesn't have a FULL-market modern/current rock station. Yes, WARQ covers the essential downtown and suburbs. But, cities like Orangeburg and Sumter are lacking the signal. Call me crazy, but 103.9 would be a good place to have WARQ to cover the market. WXRY deserves better too. Call me crazy if you don't agree, but this is all of course just my opinion. I welcome all opinions and suggestions. This market needs a shake up. Take care.

That's a good idea to give WARQ an expanded stick, but I don't see Inner City, an Urban owned company, blowing up an Urban stick to expand with a non-Urban format. Columbia is one of the few markets where they have non-Urban product. And they only have it here because they inherited Fox and WARQ when they bought the whole cluster so they could get the Big DM.
 
I have to agree with everything said here. The sad truth is that the entire market from rock to country is stagnant and frankly boring to listen to. WARQ has a great sound from their announcers and would be great at 103.9, but don't look for that to happen too for quite obvious reasons since Inner City's pride and joy are their urban stations, which in my opinion are killing each other because we ahve so many of them and it sounds to me that they sound to much alike.
 
If WXRY got a better signal, I wonder if they would go ahead and call them commercials instead of "underwriting."

Call them whatever you want...either way it's break from music to advertise.
 
If WXRY had a better signal, it would be a commercial one. ;) No other non-commercial signals in the market. BBN, CIU and USC aren't interested in selling.

There are techinical differences between enhanced underwriting and commercials, which are mostly lost on all but lawyers.
 
I really wish that we could get rid of the BBN signal here in Columbia. Where they have their stick bleeds into my house less than 1/2 mile away and they have really balked at really trying to make it better.

I think it was maybe a book or two ago that WARQ #s were down considerably, probably (obviously?) just from diary placement.

Nobody freaked out, fired staff, flipped format, changed the morning show and added more power gold.

And you know what boys and girls?

everything went back to normal.

THATS how you do that.
 
And they have some of the best on air talent in Columbia that are really fun and entertaining to listen to as well.
 
Actually, they did add a lot of power gold. The morning show added Lemmy. Cataldo left for New Orleans.

And now added The Fray, Gin Blossoms, Big Head Todd, U@, REM, etc...

I don't agree that the down books were just due to diary placement and sampling.

So that there's no sour grapes here, we're growing, so the Arbitron kiss did not come at our expense.....

Actually DM, Citadel, WFMV have some of the best and most consistent air talent on in the market. Tony Clyburn is still at the top of his game.
 
If you are going to through Tony in the mix, let's not forget about Brent and George. They still make me laugh and they have been at WTCB ro 18 or 19 years and that is a long time to be in one place in radio too.
 
I will agree with adding Brent and George. They've been tight and consistent throughout the years. Their act has never been my cup of tea (I tend to like the Don Geronimos and Eliot Seagals of the world), but they do a great job with satisfying the needs of their audience over the years. I have never heard a break where I disagreed with the technique or execution. Tony Clyburn's still #1 on my list for best in town.
 
I definitely cannot disagree with Tony Clyburn. He is a nice guy to boot and really knows his craft. I was watching him on ETV the other night during the fund raising and he does just as good fo a job on television as he does on the radio inthe afternoons.
