Latest News on Wi-Fi/700 Mhz Auction

Just some news items about Wi-Fi and the 700 Mhz auction:

Verizon and AT&T were the big winners. One objective is to bring DSL-like service to rural areas, according to the article. But it won't come cheap, initially, thanks to the FCC's auction. Look for implementation of this service around 2010 or 2011.

Then we have Intel who was able to stretch Wi-Fi out to 60 miles with 6 Mbps data rate performance.

So there are some exciting developments for webcasters in the works, especially with mobile web radio.

Now if we can just get the RIAA and Congress to bring some sanity back to these crushing royalty rates...

We're in deep trouble if AT&T won. They can't even get DSL right, let alone wi-fi! I had to go though six months of hell to get DSL installed by these clowns. I pity anybody who ponies up for their service.

As long as the RIAA and the others continues to rape the webcast community you're going to see more and more of them pull the plug - especially the little guys! Extortion by any other name is still extortion!

Yeah, Verizon isn't much better. They seem to have no problem with stopping your internet usage if you're using too much and haven't signed up for one of their higher bandwidth DSL packages.

This is why the whole FCC auction process is such a travesty. Having the deepest pockets does not equate with being the best company.

If any good came out of this auction it's from Google who forced the FCC beforehand to insure that whoever wins will have to to see to it that the infrastructure they build out will work with any handheld device made for this spectrum, regardless of manufacturer or OS.

As predicted, we are seeing only the wealthiest media companies, like Clear Channel, able to maintain a web-casting presence because of the excessive royalty fees. The inevitability of this is more boring radio...but on the web.

Here is a news release in which Google outlines its plans for the 700 MHz spectrum using Wi-Fi 2.0 or what it calls "Wi-Fi on steroids."

http://www.broadcastnewsroom.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=340656

They're predicting data transmission speeds of billions of bits per second -- far faster than the millions of bits per second available on most current broadband networks. Google also predicts that consumer devices using the "white spaces" will appear at the end of 2009.
